Five Tips to Get You through an Accident with Bosch

Malaysia sees a sales figure of over half a million new vehicles yearly. Paired with these numbers is also an unfortunate increase in road accidents. The first half of 2019 recorded 281,527 road accidents compared to 274,556 in 2018, an increase of 2.5% or 6,971 additional cases.

In line with Bosch Automotive Aftermarket Malaysia’s ‘Drive for Life’ campaign that advocates for safer cars and safer roads, they have come up with five handy tips to help you in the event of an accident.

Assess your situation

Depending on the severity of the accident, first, calmly assess yourself for injuries before checking your passengers. If everyone is safe, move your vehicle to the emergency lane and assemble the warning triangle behind your car. Have your passengers wait by the side of the road behind a barrier if possible. Should you feel threatened or intimidated, call the police and inform them of the accident and your location.

Assess your vehicle

Take photos of the damages on your car and the other vehicles involved, as this will help should there be potential disputes. You should then exchange the following information with the other drivers:

  • Car plate number, road tax, vehicle model and color
  • Driver’s name, IC number and contact details

Although exchanging personal information is essential, it can be dangerous for women to disclose this information with a stranger. If you are uncomfortable in doing so, provide the contact details of a close male friend or family member.

Follow and understand procedures

Lodge a police report within 24 hours unless you require medical attention. Once you file a statement, the police officer will take photos of your car and your case will be assigned to a traffic investigating officer.

When it comes to insurance claims, you will need a copy of the police report which will detail the party at fault and photos of the accident scene.

Service your car regularly and use quality car parts

About 20 per cent of road accidents are caused by poor condition of vehicles and roads. While it is not a significant figure, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Regular upkeep of your car and the use of quality car parts can increase its reliability, performance and safety, as well as keep you from being in unwanted situations.
