As the world struggles to control the spread of Covid-19, many of us are required to be quarantined at home. When the lockdown measures are eventually lifted, there is a need to adhere to a ‘new normal’ – a strict practice of good hygiene, mask-wearing and social distancing. At Carsome, this practice has been implemented regionally as our new standard operating procedure that will see inspectors at all centers taking the necessary steps for everyone’s safety.
However, when it comes to travelling by car, what can we do to minimise the chances of contracting the virus? Read on to find out more.
Be careful of what you touch
Information released by the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that the Covid-19 virus can survive for up to 72 hours on plastic and stainless steel, and less than 4 hours on copper. Anything from door handles, lift buttons and even petrol pumps could be a medium for transmission, therefore, it is important to wash your hands or sanitize frequently and practice proper etiquette.
Clean and disinfect your car’s frequently touched areas
We have shared some tips on how you can best clean and disinfect your car’s cabin, including the most effective ingredients to use. Whether it is using wipes, sprays or soap, focusing on high touch areas like door handles, dashboards, air conditioning vents, steering wheel is crucial.
Open windows for ventilation in-between or during each ride
When it comes to minimising virus transmission in cars, one of the frequently talked about topics is improved ventilation. Air within a cabin can stay trapped for long periods of time. While there are no conclusive studies on the effects of Covid-19 transmission from the exterior to the interior of a vehicle, it is proven that air quality inside a car is worse than outside.
With valid evidence that rolling down your windows when driving can improve air circulation, you can do the same. Using the air-conditioning fresh air and recirculation button while driving also helps improve air circulation.
Change your air filter
Insights from Carsome’s recently conducted survey on consumer behaviour found that only 8% of the respondents were aware that they should wind down their windows when necessary, and a mere 4% change their air-conditioning filters regularly.
Did you know that besides the engine air filter, there’s another one located inside the cabin? Usually located behind the glove compartment, a cabin air filter’s purpose is to help trap particles from entering the vehicle. There are various types for specific purposes. Knowing the difference between an activated carbon filter versus a HEPA one will help you with your choice.
Have a stock of disinfecting wipes, tissues, masks and a small covered bin in your car
The saying “being safe than sorry” has never been more important. Many surveys, including the one recently conducted by Carsome have concluded that more people will use private vehicles instead of public transport during Covid-19 pandemic, having a stock of disinfecting wipes and even a small covered bin in your car will be useful. After all, cleanliness is next to godliness.
Limit the number of passengers in a car
Achieving the new normal will be difficult for everyone, including the number of people in a car. This is where a limit will definitely help to negate the effects of a wider spread. Do remember to stay safe and take additional steps, especially social distancing, whenever possible.
Practicing the precautionary measures above can help prevent you from a potential viral infection, but more than that, it can also ensure that you get the best deal out of your car when you send your car in for an inspection with Carsome and sell it for cash as quick as an hour!*
