In our recent article, we listed down some measures for e-hailing drivers to take when it comes to disinfecting their cars. While some car owners may think that it may be too tedious to thoroughly clean the interior of their car, a recent study published by the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that Covid-19 can live up to four hours on copper, up to a day on cardboard, and up to three days on plastic and stainless steel. With this in mind, it is always better to be safe than sorry. In this respect, Carsome has taken the current issue seriously and have employed good hygiene practices throughout our inspection centers with masks, sanitizers and keeping strict measures on social distancing.
Before you start, protect your hands by wearing disposable rubber gloves. Areas to focus are the exterior and interior door handles, start button, steering wheel, door cards, windows, door handles, air con vents, gear lever, parking brake, sun visor and even the cabin lights. Basically, any area that you would touch frequently is key. Then, use the items listed below that could kill the virus but will not be too harsh on your interior.
Use disinfecting wipes that contain sodium hypochlorite or household bleach because they are highly effective. Cnet also recommends other consumer cleaners that use benzylkonium/ benzylammonium chloride, a common active ingredient that is used in many consumer products and is known to be gentler than bleach.
Disinfectant sprays or surface cleaners that use benzylkonium/ benzylammonium chloride like the above do the job as well. A couple of sprays on the surface with a wipe down is effective and can be used for areas like carpet and hard to reach corners.
These sanitizing sprays that contain triethlene glycol is known to kill bacteria and neutralizes viruses in the air. It has been recommended to spray it inside an unoccupied car with the air conditioning switched on, or directly on the air vents.
If you can’t get anything antibacterial, using soap is just as effective, if not better. Because soap breaks up oil, it also interacts with viruses in the same way. Using any type of soap would do the trick, as it not only kill viruses, it is less likely to degrade the delicate surfaces in your car – fabrics and leather.
For the best method to take care of surfaces and leathers, Autoblog has stated to avoid bleach except on simple plastics, to test the cleaners on a surface that is obscured, wipe off the chemicals dry and to use leather conditioner on cleaners that are alcohol-based.
In light of the current pandemic, do remember to practice good hygiene, mask up, wash your hands, sanitize and ensure that you follow social distancing.
