Watch Renault set the fastest FWD Nürburgring record with the Mégane R.S. Trophy-R

Renault has had multiple lap records at the famed Nürburgring with the Mégane R.S. that goes back for more than a decade. Starting in 2008, Renault with the Mégane R.S. R26.R set a lap of 8 minutes 17 seconds, setting a first record for Renault in the front-wheel-drive production car category.

Today, the company has done it again and presents the Mégane R.S. Trophy-R as the latest model to break the Nürburgring Nordschleife record in the front-wheel-drive production car category. The time they set 7:40.1 is faster than the previous record setter, the Honda Civic Type R at 7:43.8.

How did they achieve this? For Renault, the Trophy-R doesn’t add on more power than the standard Trophy. It still has the same 1.8-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine developing 296 hp and 400 Nm of torque. Instead, the team focused on maximum weight reduction, reworked aerodynamics and a more radical development on the drive axles.

The result? The weight reduction is up to 130 kg compared to the Trophy excluding options. They’ve also partnered with Akrapovič for the exhaust system, Brembo for brakes, Öhlins for shock absorbers, Bridgestone tyres and Sabelt for the bucket seats.

If you’re looking to get one, Renault says that the Mégane R.S. Trophy-R will be marketed before the end of 2019 as an exclusive limited edition of a few hundred units. Watch the record setting lap time below.

It's quite a slim chance that you'll be able to get your hands on the Trophy-R. Why not look at the Mégane RS 280 Cup instead?

Sedan's? Nissan's next Sylphy is quite good looking. Click here to learn more.
