How to Calculate EV Roadtax in Malaysia

The current tax exemption, which was an initiative to encourage the adoption of EVs in Malaysia will expire in 2025. Once the grace period is over, how exactly do you calculate the road tax of EVs in Malaysia?

Fixed Rate For EVs in Malaysia (Under 80kW)

For private and company-owned Saloon EVs in Malaysia like the Ora Good Cat, Neta V, and BYD Seal with an output of 80 kW and below, the rates are as follows: 

  • Less than 50 kW = RM20
  • 50 kW to 60 kW = RM44
  • 60 kW to 70 kW = RM56
  • 70 kW to 80 kW = RM72

EV Roadtax in MalaysiaTaking into account these rates, it’s quite simple to apply on EVs below 80 kW. The road tax for a 47.8 kW battery on an Ora Good Cat 400 will cost you RM20 annually.

Progressive Rate For EVs in Malaysia (Above 80kW) 

For EVs in Malaysia with a wattage exceeding 80 kW, here’s how the progressive rate is calculated together with its basic rate:  

Motor Wattage  Basic Rate Progressive Rate
80 kW to 90 kW  RM 160.00 RM0.32 for every 0.05 kW increased from 80 kW
90 kW to 100kW  RM 224.00  RM 0.25 for every 0.05 kW increased from 90 kW 
100 kW to 125 kW  RM 274.00 RM 0.50 for every 0.05 kW increased from 100 kW
125 kW to 150k W RM 524.00 RM 1.00 for every 0.05 kW increased from 123 kW
More than 150 kW  RM1,024.00 RM1.35 for every 0.05 kW increased from 150 kW

Fixed Rate For EVs in Malaysia (Under 80kW)

For private and company-owned SUV EVs in Malaysia like the BMW iX, and Tesla Model Y with an output of 80 kW and below, the rates are as follows: 

  • 50 kW and below = RM20
  • Above 50 kW to 60 kW = RM42.50
  • Above 60 kW to 70 kW = RM50
  • Above 70 kW to 80 kW = RM60

For EVs in Malaysia with a wattage exceeding 80 kW, here’s how the progressive rate is calculated together with its basic rate:

80 kW to 90 kW RM 165.00  RM 0.17 for every 0.05 kW increase from 80 kW
90 kW to 100 kW RM 199.00 RM 0.22 for every 0.05 kW increase from 90 kW
100 kW to 125 kW RM 243.00  RM 0.44 for every 0.05 kW increase from 100 kW
125 kW to 150 kW RM 463.00  RM0.88 for every 0.05 kW increase from 125 kW
Above 150 kW RM 903.00  RM 1.20 for every 0.05 kW increase from 150 kW
