The All-New 2019 Mercedes-AMG G 63 is ready to take on the 21st century

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has launched a few of the ultimate G-Class 63 SUV range including the AMG GLC 63 S 4Matic+, GLC 63 S Coupé 4Matic+ and the all-new top of the range AMG G 63. Here’s what you need to know.

AMG G 63

The G-Class/ G-Wagen (short for Geländewagen, German for off-road vehicle) needs no introduction. Whether it be from its distinct shape or its reputation as a vehicle for military operators worldwide, the SUV has been around for 39 years. In those 39 years, the G-Class has been made into various body styles to accommodate military or private clients’ needs, but the passenger version has largely been the same vehicle updated over the years to include better equipment, safety and features.

This has changed in 2018. Now in its second generation, the all-new G-Class retains a lot of its rugged boxy appeal but has been properly upgraded to feature the brand’s latest technologies available in the Mercedes line-up.

When Mercedes-Benz says all-new, they weren’t kidding. Despite the familiar shape, only five items from the old generation was carried over. Furthermore, the difficulty in retaining its exterior shape and yet pass pedestrian protection tests entailed the engineers to redesign the protruding indicators at the top fenders to collapse into their housings when hit by an object.

Significant improvements for the G-Class include the replacement of the old steering system to a new rack and pinion one with adaptive electric power assist. By having this, Mercedes was able to include safety and convenience technologies like Active Lane-Keeping Assist and Pre-Safe Collision Avoidance systems amongst others. Suspensions now feature coil springs all-round, double wishbone suspension with independent front axle, and a rigid axle with a five-link suspension at the rear.

The addition of three inches in body width and 2.1-inches in length has resulted in better passenger room for all. But look inside and the changes are monumental. Driver central now includes the widescreen cockpit with two 12-3-inch displays, the new steering wheel with touch controls, turbine inspired air vents, and creature comforts of a 360-degree camera and the Burmester surround sound system for our market. Oh, and the 64-colour ambient lighting system in their new cars? It’s in here too, so you can rock those disco lights while you conquer the unbeaten path.

Because the G-Class commands the terrain, under the bonnet, the G 63 features a 4.0-litre Biturbo V8 that produces 585 hp and 850 Nm of torque from 2,500 to 3,500 rpm paired to an AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission. Power goes through the 4Matic all-wheel drive system. Acceleration is 4.5-seconds to a hundred from nought, with fuel consumption figures rated at 13.1-litres per 100 km.

The price? The G 63 starts from RM 1,464,888 on-the-road without insurance.

AMG GLC 63 S 4Matic+ and GLC 63 S 4Matic+ Coupé

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia did not hold back on introducing more powerful GLCs to accompany the G 63. Here the brand also launched the GLC SUV and Coupé with the AMG 63 S badge.

Underneath, both models feature a 4.0-litre Twin-turbo V8 that produces 503 hp and 700 Nm of torque at 1,750 to 4,500 rpm. Mated to a AMG Speedshift MCT 9-speed transmission and power to an AMG Performance 4Matic+ permanent all-wheel drive system. The ‘plus’ denotes the fully variable torque distribution. These GLCs are truly quick, with century sprint times at 3.8-seconds (for an SUV!).

These GLCs will look different at the front thanks to the vertical lines on the Panamericana grille and the sportier bumpers and intakes. Usually reserved for the AMG GT family, these new GLCs are the first AMG Performance vehicles to feature them.

Inside, the familiar interior layout is present, except for the AMG treatment throughout the cabin. The centre console gets an AMG carbon-fibre or light longitudinal-grain aluminium trim, red designo seat belts, dashboard and beltlines in Artico man-made leather in black nappa, as well as the AMG performance steering wheel in Dinamica.

Driver assistance systems include surround view camera, Distance Pilot Distronic with Steering Pilot, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Brake Assist with Cross-Traffic, Active Parking Assist and Pre-Safe, and Driving Assistance Package Plus.

The GLC 63 S is priced from RM 915,888 while the Coupé is from RM 933,888 on-the-road without insurance.

Don’t forget that Mercedes also has the AMG CLS 53!
