Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Kuala Lumpur has officially introduced the world’s most luxurious SUV – the Cullinan. This showcases Rolls-Royce’s first ever SUV which also has the brand’s first ever all-wheel drive system.

The Cullinan introduced at the launch was customised with an Infinity Black Commissioned Collection exterior paint, Scivaro grey, black and mandarin interior shades, and finished with open pore blackwood and chevron wood veneer. The options included to the vehicle shown features the individual seat configuration with rear theatre displays, ‘Box-grain’ leather trim, Rolls-Royce Bespoke audio, as well as an exterior and polished stainless steel package amongst others.

Underneath the hood, the Cullinan is powered by a 6.75-litre twin turbo V12 that outputs 563 hp and 850 Nm at 1,600 rpm. Despite the SUV’s unladen weight at just under 2.7 tons, the century sprint can be achieved in just 5.1-seconds.

What makes Rolls-Royce and the Cullinan special? Read on to find out.

It Is All In The Name

The Cullinan is named after the largest diamond ever discovered in South Africa, in 1905. The diamond weighed 3,106.75 carats and was cut into over 100 stones of assorted cuts. However, the two largest pieces of the Cullinan are now part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom – a 530.4 carat diamond on the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross and another 317.4 carat on the Imperial State Crown.

It Is The Brand’s First All-Wheel Drive Vehicle

It is quite common to think that since Rolls-Royce is under the BMW Group, the Cullinan shares the same platform as BMW’s upcoming X7 SUV. However, it doesn’t. The Cullinan is based on the same aluminium spaceframe architecture as the brand’s Phantom VII limousine and is designed in-house, with 30 per cent increased rigidity than its elder sibling.

From the get-go, Rolls-Royce wanted the Cullinan to go anywhere the customer wanted to go. So the brand’s first all-wheel drive moves away from its traditional rear-wheel nature. Underneath the new double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle provide control over lateral roll just as the four-wheel steering does. Water wading depth is 540 mm.

It Sees Further and Knows Where You’re Going

The Cullinan’s headlights are a laser-light system that shines over 600 metres ahead. Of course there’s a host of driver assistance systems like cameras for night vision and vision assist. Talking about the camera system, it looks forward to the road ahead and adjusts the suspension proactively. This works together with the 8-speed automatic transmission that is satellite aided, which sets up the ride based on where you’re going.

Pure Luxury Personified

The unit showcased by Rolls-Royce Kuala Lumpur features the Individual Seat configuration, which are two separate seats at the rear, as opposed to the five-seat option. Here there’s a chiller for your bubbly, glasses to match, and up to the customers’ imagination to include. If a piece looks like aluminium or wood, it certainly is. Leather here is “box grain” on the dashboard and doors, while the seats are upholstered with high-end Bavarian leather. It also includes a glass separating the cabin and the trunk area, ensuring that the passengers get their personal space in comfort.

Development and Attention To Detail

The Rolls-Royce umbrella is widely publicised to be located within the door or fender of every model for easy access. But unknown to most, the umbrella has been engineered to be weighted perfectly, easy to open and close with a slide, has enough struts in the construction to withstand high wind and force, is Teflon and antibacterial coated to prevent mould growing, as well as drainage and ventilation to ensure the umbrella stays dry within its housing.

Also for those with a keen eye, the Cullinan has a single stainless steel trim that begins from the front of the A-pillar above the doors and continues all the way till the D-pillar around the fixed window panel.
