The new Mercedes-AMG GT R and GT C are here

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has launched the new AMG GT R and GT C in Malaysia. The GT R and GT C are essentially at the top of the AMG GT Coupe range, with the latter just a little less track focused but just as capable.

Power

Underneath the hood of both coupe’s lie a 4.0-litre V8 Biturbo engine that delivers 577 hp and 700 Nm of torque from 2,100 to 5,500 rpm on the GT R, and 550 hp and 680 Nm of torque from 2,100 to 5,500 rpm on the GT C. Both are paired to a AMG Speedshift seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and takes 3.6-seconds to reach 100 km/h from a standstill. The GT C’s sprint takes just 0.1-second more.

Performance in Design

Both the GT R and GT C have the Airpanel active air management system that has vertical louvres positioned in the lower area directly behind the front apron. They are electronically controlled and are usually closed during braking and cornering at high speed. However, when components need cooling air, they open to improve airflow to the heat exchangers.

The GT R on the other hand take functional form to another level. The wheel arch liners with special cooling-air slots ensure ideal airflow through the double wheel arch radiators. To optimise the flow of the wheel arches, the GT R also has air curtains on the outside of the front fascia. The carbon component moves downward by 40 mm when at 80 km/h in Race mode, this is to change the airflow that allows the GT R to steer more precisely and improve drag coefficient.

New Updates

The headlights are now in line with the AMG GT family with the arched light guide that acts as a DRL, navigation and turn signal all-in-one. As for the LED tail lights, they are now visually deeper set and sportier with the dark background.

At the rear apron of the GT C, the sporty black diffuser insert has been redesigned, as is the trapeze shaped twin tail pipe covers. The GT R in this view is certainly the sportiest of the bunch. The large centrally positioned tail pipe cover with centre bar is flanked by two more black tail pipes on the left and right of the diffuser.

The cabin updates include the new 12.3-inch fully digital instrument display and 10.25-inch multimedia display on the centre console. The latter is a Comand online unit and is now Apple CarPlay compatible. Because the instrument cluster is digital, there’s a new screen design with three AMG-specific styles of Classic, Sporty and Supersport.

The stylised V8 design of the centre console remains, however the buttons now come with a coloured TFT display and sits between the new Touchpad without Controller. The latest AMG performance steering wheel with touch controls also come standard here.

The most interesting addition is the AMG Track Pace system that transforms Comand and a smartphone into a personal race engineer. This allows more than 80 items of vehicle-specific data such as laps, sector times, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, accelerator and brake pedal movements and steering angles to be logged so that it can be analysed in detail to improve performance.

AMG GT R Specific

Here the local GT R trim comes with the AMG Exterior Carbon-Fibre package II and AMG High-performance ceramic composite brakes. It also comes with the AMG Track Package that comprises a roll-over protection system, enclosed 4-point safety harness for driver and a 2 kg fire extinguisher.

The bolted steel roll cage of the roll-over protection system consists of a main roll bar, a brace for mounting the harnesses, two rear braces as well as a diagonal X-brace in the rear end. The AMG bucket seats enhance the racing feel of the GT R.

Safety and Assistance

Both cars come with Active Brake Assist, Adaptive Brake Lights and Highbeam Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Front Camera, Keyless Go, Lane Keeping Assist, Parktronic, Pre-Safe System, Reversing Camera, Tyrefit and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

Price

The recommended retail price is RM 1,558,888 for the Mercedes-AMG GT C and RM 1,712,888 for the Mercedes-AMG GT R both on-the-road without insurance.
