The first ever Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan is now here

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has launched the all-new A-Class sedan based on the latest fourth generation A-Class hatchback. Read on to know more!


Where does this car slot into the Mercedes-Benz line up?

The A-Class sedan is now the entry level Mercedes sedan you can get, replacing the current CLA Coupé. Because of the repositioning in the brand’s models, the upcoming second generation CLA Coupé will be more premium than before.


What variants will be available?

Like the A-Class hatchback, the sedan will also be available in two variants – the A 200 Progressive Line and A 250 AMG Line. The former is powered by a 1.3-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine outputting 163 hp with 250 Nm of torque from 1,620 to 4,000 rpm while the A 250 comes with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged unit producing 224 hp with 350 Nm from 1,800 to 4,000 rpm. As for century sprint times, the A 200 takes 8.1-seconds and the A 250 does it in 6.3-seconds. Both cars’ engines are mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic with power to the front wheels.


What’s special about the A-Class sedan?

Well, apart from being the first ever sedan in the A-Class line up, the sedan like its hatchback sibling brings all the amazing digitalization and equipment seen in a package that’s 130 mm longer than the five-door hatch. The additional boot size adds 50-litres to the 370-litre in the hatch for a total of 420-litres.


But what is most interesting is the shape of the A-Class sedan. It holds the current world record for being the most aerodynamic production car on the planet. With a coefficient drag of 0.22, this figure equals the previous record held by the CLA Coupé. Because the frontal area of 2.19 m² is smaller than the CLA and has a drag of less than 0.49 m², the A-Class sedan is the current aerodynamic king.


What about the differences between variants?

For the exterior, the A 250 is kit with the AMG Line package that puts on sportier bumpers and 18-inch AMG five twin-spoke light-alloy wheels. As for the A 200, the Progressive Line is a little more toned down but also comes with 18-inch five twin-spoke light-alloy wheels. As for the interior, the look is revolutionary for the compact class segment, bringing inspiration from the brand’s higher end cars including the 64-colour ambient lighting.


The design of the dashboard extends from one door to the other without visual discontinuity and is highlighted by the newly designed centre-console area and two 10.25-inch instrument and infotainment displays.


The trim difference for the A 200 and A 250 is the Black open-pore linden wood trim on the former, while the latter comes with a Light longitudinal-grain aluminium trim. Here the higher variant also gets sports and heated front seats.


What are the standard equipment included on both?

The infotainment system is identical with Mercedes’ latest MBUX on both, hard-disc navigation, touchpad, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, as well as the safety and assistance package. This includes a Reversing Camera, Active Parking Assist with Parktronic, Active Brake Assist, Cruise Control, Keyless-Go, Pre-Safe and Tyre pressure monitoring system.


How much do they cost?

We’re happy to say that the A 200 sedan is the cheapest sedan you can now get from Mercedes-Benz at RM 229,888. The A 250 sedan is priced at RM 267,888. This puts the sedans at a RM 2,000 and RM 4,000 premium over the hatchbacks. Prices are on the road without insurance and comes with four-years and unlimited-mileage warranty.
