The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class is now in Malaysia. Here’s what you need to know

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has finally launched the all new fourth generation A-Class in two models, an A 200 Progressive Line and A 250 AMG Line at this weekend’s Urban Hunting Festival. Let’s get straight to the details.

Exterior

In terms of design, the new A-Class is sleeker than before, taking the brand’s latest Sensual Purity design language at the front. Here the visual differences between the A 200 and A 250 can be seen in the bumpers, side skirts, and alloy wheel designs, all of which have the AMG line treatment on the higher A 250.

Measurements have increased compared to its predecessor, with an additional 127 mm in length, 16 mm in width, 7 mm height and 30 mm wheelbase. Cargo has increased to 370 litres.

Interior

Inside, the changes are immense. The whole new interior has been modernised and revolutionised with digital displays and luxury. The wide visual and spaciousness of the dashboard is thanks to the continuity of the wing shaped design that is from the front door, across the dashboard to the other door.

The clean look of the free standing widescreen display’s are also a treat, the single unit incorporates two 10.25-inch displays – a media and a combination unit.

Other completely new design elements are the turbine inspired air vents, new steering wheel, door handles, door-pulls, and touchpad. In fact, all parts of the interior have been redesigned to showcase a more youthful feel. Look closer at the seat adjustment buttons, signal and transmission stalks and you’ll notice that the details are quite refreshing.

The trim differences between the A 200 and A 250 are the black open pore lime wood trim on the former, with the AMG line having the light longitudinal-grain aluminium trim. The A 250 also is decked out in nappa leather steering wheel,

Drive at dusk, and the interior also features 64 colours of ambient lighting, which are composed into ten colour worlds which allow for a spectacular spectrum, including a mode that can match the styles of the widescreen display for a more striking impact.

Power

The A 200 now features a 1.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine that develops 163 hp and 250 Nm of torque from 1,620 to 4,000 rpm. The A 250 on the other hand gets a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit with an output of 224 hp and 350 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 4,000 rpm. Both are mated to a 7-Speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Zero to hundred times are 8.0-seconds and 6.2-seconds respectively, with fuel consumption figures at 5.6-litres and 6.5-litres per 100 km.

Highlight feature – MBUX

The new A-Class is the first from Mercedes to feature the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). The multimedia system is able to learn, recognise and understand sentences within the infotainment function and vehicle operation thanks to artificial intelligence. MBUX can be individualised and adapted to suit each user. The main MBUX system controls is the touchscreen, touchpad or touch control buttons on the steering wheel. But with intelligent voice control with natural language comprehension, the system can be activated by saying “Hey Mercedes” with other functional inputs like destination, phone call, music, climate control and lighting.

The multimedia system also has hard disk-based navigation and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support as standard.

Safety

The safety and assistance package for both models come with seven airbags, Pre-Safe positioning for front seats, tyre pressure monitoring system, Active Brake Assist, Active Parking Assist with reverse camera, and cruise control with speedtronic speed limiter.

Ownership and Financing

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has a Plan A all-in-one financing plan that offers financing, insurance and service packages. This includes lower monthly instalments, guaranteed future value, flexible end of agreement options and a wide range of insurance products plus meticulous service packages. The Plan A financing starts from RM 1,988 and comes with a complimentary first year tyre and rim insurance, with the campaign ending 31st December 2018. The A 200 Progressive is priced at RM 227,888 and the A 250 AMG line is RM 263,888 on-the-road without insurance.
