Perodua takes the lion’s share with 40% of the market in 2019

Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) has seized a significant share of the car market in 2019. With a total of 240,341 vehicles sold, Perodua surpassed its total car sales in 2018 by 13,098 vehicles. Perodua had started 2019 with the introduction of its first-ever Aruz SUV in January with 30,115 units sold by year-end.

Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad, chief executive officer and president of Perodua, said: “Against a 2019 total industry volume estimated at 604,775 units, Perodua took nearly 40% of the Malaysian market, overtaking last year’s 38%.”

On fulfilling existing bookings and expected production, Zainal Abidin said Perodua foresees a challenging first half in 2020 as they focus on meeting existing bookings. “We will evaluate the market situation in the second half while building up our inventory so that we are ready to take advantage of the market if it improves,” he said. The brand expects to boost production in 2020 to 254,000 units, an increase of 4% from 244,400 units in 2019. The production increase includes export and stocking up for 2021.

As for aftersales results, Perodua serviced 2.35 million vehicles in 2019 throughout its 186 centers nationwide, an increase of 8.3% over 2.17 million service intakes in 2018.
