Here’s why the latest 2019 Toyota Vios is the Best It’s Ever Been

Toyota Malaysia has launched the all-new third generation “facelift” Vios. It looks quite sleek compared to the previous model.

Wait. Isn’t this the fourth generation Vios?

No it is not, and we didn’t make a mistake. Although the latest Vios looks all-new, it is not a generation change but a significant update to the current generation. What Toyota has done is considerably improve the current third generation Vios not only in aesthetics, but in engineering as well. This includes a more rigid bodyshell, new shock absorbers in the suspension, better noise insulation among others.

So what is new?

The looks are completely new. The new Vios in our market is actually the Toyota Yaris Ativ (sedan) in Thailand. The front end is bolder with sharper headlights, fang styled bumper and fog lamp housings, and has integrated DRLs in the bumper, located separately and below the headlamps. The new look is certainly more sculpted than before. The sides now have a shoulder line that moves upwards towards the rear door. At the back, the tail lights appear broader thanks to its extension towards the sides.

On a side note, the new Vios will actually be made in UMW Toyota’s new manufacturing plant in Bukit Raja, Klang, Selangor.

What about numbers and figures?

The new Vios is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder Dual VVT-i engine with an output of 106 hp and 140 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. It is paired to a CVT with a 7-speed Sport Shiftmatic mode. There is a Drive mode switch for Eco, Normal and Sport. To add on, steering is electric and the fuel tank size is at 42-litres.

What variants are offered?

Just like before, the new Vios will be offered in J, E and G trims. All variants now are offered with CVT transmission, including the base J model. In terms of features, the J has been improved in offering, with LED DRLs, Rear fog lamps, Keyless entry, Push button start, Front footwell lighting, Illuminated scuff plates, Two USB ports in the rear and Audio CD player with AUX, USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

The E variant adds on front fog lamps, rear LED tail lamps, split foldable 60:40 rear seats, Acoustic windshield glass, Solar and security tint, Retractable wing mirrors with auto fold, Steering wheel audio controls, DVD player with 6.8-inch touchscreen, USB mirroring, HDMI, Voice Dial, AUX, Bluetooth and Reverse Camera with 360-degree look. There is also Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and a Digital Video Recorder.

The top of the range G variant is fully loaded with Rear disc brakes, Projector halogen lamps, Leather seats, Optitron instrument cluster with 4.2-inch Multi-information display, Steering wheel with audio, phone, MID controls and Paddle shifters, Six speakers that accompany the 6.8-inch DVD touchscreen player and front and rear parking sensors.

How is safety?

We’re especially happy that Toyota has made this the safest Vios ever. Asean NCAP has rated the new Vios with five stars and includes 7 SRS airbags including driver’s knee, front side and curtain shield, Isofix, Vehicle stability control, Traction control, ABS with EBD, Brake assist and Hill-start assist.

Prices and colours?

All variants will be available in five colours of Dark Blue Metallic, Red Mica Metallic, Attitude Black, Silver Metallic and Super White II. Prices are RM 77,200 for the 1.5J, RM 81,200 for the 1.5E and RM 87,300 for the 1.5G.

The new Vios comes with five-years warranty with unlimited mileage and a free 24Seven Road Assist membership for the first year. This provides peace of mind to customers who can receive roadside assistance with just a call, 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
