Subaru launches Forester e-Boxer and GT Edition at 2020 Singapore Motorshow

Subaru distributor, Motor Image, has launched the Subaru Forester e-Boxer hybrid and GT Edition at the 2020 Singapore Motorshow. The Subaru e-Boxer is available in a sole variant of a 2.0i-S EyeSight Hybrid and is priced at RM376,896 (SG$124,800) on-the-road, while the GT Edition package is an add-on priced at RM8,722 (SG$2,888). The e-Boxer price of SG$124,800 on-the-road is inclusive of Certificate of Entitlement in Singapore.

Forester e-Boxer

For those unfamiliar with the e-Boxer badge, it is a self-charging mild hybrid system that combines battery-powered electric motor assistance with Subaru’s core technologies – the Boxer engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The benefits of the e-Boxer for the Forester includes better acceleration that results in enhanced off-road capability and improved efficiency.

Engine and Power

The Forester e-Boxer features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine that outputs 148 hp and 196 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. A 16 hp electric motor supplements the engine with 66 Nm of torque. Together, the powertrain is paired to Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT transmission.

How the e-Boxer system works

When it comes to power delivery, the e-Boxer’s parallel hybrid works automatically behind the scenes and switches between three driving modes – EV (pure electric), Engine (petrol engine only), and Motor Assist (electric motor and petrol engine combined).

In EV mode, the system activates in slow driving conditions and works solely on electric power at low speeds from a standstill. Motor Assist mode then takes over during acceleration and high engine loads and splits power between both to optimize performance and efficiency. Finally, during cruising, the vehicle will run on Engine mode where electric power is deactivated, and the petrol engine will recharge the hybrid battery. Releasing the accelerator or pressing the brake pedal will recharge the battery.

Subaru EyeSight

EyeSight is the brand’s driver assistance technology and comes equipped with several active safety measures to mitigate collisions. On the Forester e-Boxer, the EyeSight package includes: Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Sway Warning. EyeSight was first available locally in the Outback 2.5 i-S model. Click here to learn more about the features of EyeSight.

While not part of the EyeSight system, the e-Boxer is also equipped with Reverse Automatic Braking that applies the brakes automatically if there is a risk of a rear collision.

Forester GT Edition

Motor Image also took the opportunity to unveil the Forester GT Edition. Like the XV GT Edition which was launched in Malaysia last year, the GT Edition is an official aesthetic add-on to the Forester that has been created in close collaboration with Giken Co. Ltd and Masahiko Kobayashi. Kobayashi, a former Subaru Chief Designer, was responsible for the exterior design of more than 12 Subaru production models.

The Forester GT Edition is available as a package add-on for all the fifth-generation variants of the Forester in Singapore.
