TC Subaru has launched the fifth generation Subaru Forester in Malaysia together with a revamped Subaru Petaling Jaya showroom. Built on the all-new Subaru Global Platform, the brand’s current cars all ride on this new chassis design that incorporates stiffer bodies that increase safety through greater impact absorption. The result is that the cars delivers less shake, less road noise and better handling.
The three variants of the base 2.0i-L, 2.0i-S and 2.0i-S EyeSight all come with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol that outputs 154 hp and 196 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm mated to a Lineartronic CVT with 7-speed Manual mode, with drive going to Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system.
In terms of size, the all-new Forester has increased in wheelbase by 30 mm, which contributes to the length, width up by 20 mm but height down 5 mm. This is said to have improved leg, head, and shoulder room within the cabin. As for the boot space, at 520-litres it has gone up by 100-litres compared to before and opens to 2,155-litres with the rear seats down. Folding split is 60:40.
As for the interior design, the layout is very much like the one seen in the XV. Deep character lines accentuate a sportier and rugged look especially on the door cards, centre console and multifunction steering wheel. Instrument cluster has a 4.2-inch display for driving information and is also accompanied by a 6.3-inch LCD multifunction display on the upper dashboard for vehicle information. The head unit is an 8-inch touchscreen unit with Bluetooth, as well as reverse camera and side view monitors.
For the features list, there’s quite a bit to go around as standard, including three 12V power outlets including one in the luggage area, Dual USB A ports for rear passengers, HDMI and Aux input, Rear View Camera and Cruise Control.
Driving functions wise, X-Mode is standard on all, as is Hill Descent Control, Active Torque Vectoring, Vehicle Dynamics Control System, Auto Vehicle Hold and Electronic Parking Brake. Power Rear Tailgate is only available on the 2.0i-S variants.
The highlight for Subaru’s Global Platform cars is safety and the highest spec Forester comes with EyeSight on top of the standard safety of 7 Airbags. There are a few additional features on top of EyeSight, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Rear Vehicle Detection and the Side View Monitor.
The Forester is priced at RM 139,788 for the 2.0i-L, RM 149,788 for the 2.0i-S and RM 159,788 for the 2.0i-S EyeSight. Warranty coverage is five-years or 100,000 km whichever comes first.
