Goodyear Malaysia launches 6,680 Solar Panels on top of Shah Alam Plant

Goodyear Malaysia has launched one of its biggest sustainability initiatives, an installation of 6,680 solar panels located on top of its production plant and corporate office in Shah Alam. Officiated by Yeo Bee Yin, Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC), the move is aimed to reduce the overall carbon footprint in the brand’s plant and puts them in line with Goodyear’s global mission to drive sustainability and reduce environmental impact.

To drive more sustainability efforts, Goodyear started the “Better Future” program at the corporate level several years ago. Through the program the brand identified more than 600 energy efficiency projects that focus on environmental protection. For Malaysia alone, they have invested nearly USD $5.7-million into the plant as part of the energy and environmental sustainability efforts since 2015 and has eliminated almost 17% of carbon emissions in 2018.

The solar panel system can produce 2.5MW (megawatts) of electricity power daily and is connected to six Low Voltage (LV) substations located within the plant. The panels will power the manufacturing as well as office and warehouse buildings and are estimated to reduce 1.98-million kilograms of carbon emissions per year, across 25 years.
