Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has previewed the AMG E 53 sedan and coupé, about two months after the launch of the AMG CLS 53. This preview essentially updates the performance AMG E 43 sedan to the AMG E 53, and introduces a performance AMG E 53 Coupé to the market.
As with the trim of these vehicles, the specifications of the E 53 sedan include the Mercedes-AMG exterior with night package and AMG interior with carbon trim and carbon fibre centre console, nappa leather steering wheel, dashboard, as well as add ons for the Comand system such as AMG Track Pace, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wireless charger for mobile phones and a head-up display for driving information in view.
The E 53 Coupé however, comes with a similar spec, apart from the interior aluminium trim with light crystal grain and centre console in black piano-lacquer look. Meanwhile the list of safety and assistant package like active parking assist with parktronic, cruise control with Speedtronic and also surround view camera comes standard for both body styles.
However, the most important change in this are the numbers. What differences does the 43 and 53 bring to power, and what is that EQ Boost everybody’s talking about?
Mercedes’ AMG 43’s engines are known as the brand’s mid-range AMGs. They feature a 3.0-litre bi-turbo V6 which on the E 43 outputs 396 hp with 520 Nm of torque from 2,500 to 5,000 rpm. Replacing it is the AMG 53’s which instead is a 3.0-litre turbo in-line six-cylinder unit paired with an integrated starter-generator (ISG) – a compact generator that acts as a starter, hybrid assist motor and kinetic energy regeneration.
While output is an increased 34 hp to 435 hp and 520 Nm of torque, the importance of EQ Boost allows the engine to hit peak torque from idle within two seconds under full throttle. The ISG has 22 hp and 250 Nm of boost, which thanks to the wonders of boost, is able to “torque fill” when needed.
Since the ISG has three duties, it not only recuperates kinetic energy, but also is able to power the water and air-conditioning pump, it removes the need for belt drive and also frees up space in the engine department.
But Mercedes has larger plans for EQ Boost. Although seen here in the AMG E 53 sedan and coupé duo, the ISG is also seen in the CLS 450 and will be in the upcoming facelifted C 200 – the latter which will have a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 13 hp and 160 Nm of additional power.
The Mercedes-AMG E 53 4Matic+ Sedan and Coupé will be priced at an estimate RM 740,000 and RM 764,000 respectively, without insurance.
