BMW Malaysia sales reach 11,567 units in 2019

Luxury carmaker BMW Malaysia Sdn Bhd (BMW Group Malaysia) sold 11,567 vehicles last year compared to 14,338 in 2018. The higher vehicle sales in 2018 were driven by zero Goods and Services Tax (GST) for three months, pending the reintroduction of the Sales and Services Tax (SST). Price differences with and without GST were as high as RM69,882 for a BMW X6 M that carries an RM1.238 mil price tag with GST included.

 

BMW Group Malaysia  introduced 32 new model variants across its BMW, Mini and BMW Motorrad brands, more than double of 2018. The units sold last year comprised 9,300 BMWs, followed by 1,142 Minis and 1,125 BMW Motorrads.

 

In the sedan segment, BMW sold 2,514 units of the 3 Series, over 2,000 units of the 5 Series, and more than 300 units of the 7 Series. As for the X-range SUVs, 1,354 units of the X3 led the list, followed by 1,331 units of the X1 and 975 units of the previous generation X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid. For Mini and BMW Motorrad, both brands had significant contributions from compact luxury crossover Countryman and dual-purpose off-road/on-road Adventure bikes.

 

Being the market leader for electrified vehicles worldwide, the brand globally moved 145,815 electrified BMWs and Minis last year, including the 3,148 units delivered in Malaysia. Locally, there have been a total of over 17,000 electrified vehicles sold by BMW Group Malaysia since 2015. As for expanding the electromobility infrastructure in the country, 18 new BMW i Charging facilities were introduced across Malaysia.

 

Harald Hoelzl, managing director of BMW Group Malaysia, said: “We are committed to continue leading the charge for electromobility in Malaysia, especially in light of the upcoming National Automotive Policy announcement that will see electrified vehicles play a prominent role in propelling our automotive sector to greater heights.”

 

As for 2020, the brand has a focus on continuing its commitment to driving initiatives for innovation, local assembly capabilities. BMW will also continue to drive awareness of new and clean technology for the automotive industry and develop the infrastructure for premium vehicles in the country.
