The Stunning All-New 2018 Volvo XC60 is Finally Here

The 2018 Volvo XC60 has been officially launched in Malaysia today, with some interesting variants offered. Seen here is the fully-imported T8 Twin Engine Inscription Plus, which as of publication, is limited in numbers. Nevertheless the XC60 will be available in its locally-assembled (CKD) units soon. Onto the variants, there will be a total of three available – T5 Momentum, T8 Twin Engine Inscription and T8 Twin Engine Inscription Plus. Bookings for the new SUV is now open with deliveries within the next few months.

The T8 Twin Engine is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain which produces 407 hp and 640 Nm of torque. Out of the combined output of 407 hp, the internal combustion engine delivers 320 hp, while the electric motor produces 87 hp respectively. More impressively, the new XC60 can achieve a century sprint of 5.3-seconds and an outstandingly efficient 2.1-litre/ 100km. When it comes to getting things going, the XC60 uses an 8-speed Automatic Transmission with Geartronic which has Drive Mode Settings and Paddle Shifts for those twisty Sunday mornings. Only the fully-imported version of the XC60 Inscription Plus comes with Active Chassis with Air Suspension and Regenerative Braking. All CKD XC60’s come with leaf springs and hydraulic absorbers.

Lennart Stegland, MD of Volvo Car Malaysia with the new XC60.

“Volvo has a vision that by the year 2020, no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car – this underlines our leadership in safety technologies and makes the new XC60 one of the safest cars that we have ever made,” said Lennart Stegland, Managing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia.

IntelliSafe Systems In The New XC60

The Volvo XC60 on all variants locally introduces the City Safety Technology with steering support. This new system helps the driver take evasive action in an emergency situation. Steering support helps the driver to steer away from a threat safely in the blink of an eye. Steering support works by braking the inner wheels (in the turning manoeuvre) individually to make the turning and to help straighten the direction of travel by braking the outer wheels. Steering support is always active between 50 and 100 km/h and cannot be disconnected.

Other than that, there is also a Run-off Road safety feature. Volvo introduced Run-off Road Mitigation to prevent unintentional road departure at vehicle speeds between 65 – 140 km/h. When a potential run-off road situation arises, torque can be applied to the steering to support the driver with braking action. Also, Run-off Road Protection works to help reduce spine injuries. Volvo has designed an energy-absorbing functionality between the seat and seat frame which deforms mechanically to cushion the vertical forces when the car encounters a hard landing in the terrain.

Also part of the new XC60, is Oncoming Lane Mitigation which will help the driver avoid collisions with oncoming vehicles by assisting them to steer back into their own lane. The system is active at speeds between 60 and 140 km/h, which requires a visible lane marking and detects oncoming four-wheeled vehicles.

BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with Steer Assist, works by detecting approaching traffic from the rear of the car, from both left-hand and right-hand side lanes. The system warns the driver if it is not safe to change lanes with an amber light in the door mirror. BLIS with Steer Assist is available as an option for the XC60 and the 90 Series cars.

The price? The T5 Momentum is RM 298,888; T8 Twin Engine Inscription RM 333,888; and the T8 Twin Engine Inscription Plus at RM 343,888. All prices are on the road without insurance and comes with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty.
