Electrify Your Drive with BMW’s First-Ever 5 Series Hybrid

BMW Group Malaysia has launched the 530e, the brand’s first-ever 5 Series Plug-in Hybrid. This brings the brand’s iPerformance model line-up locally to five; with a portfolio that includes the 330e, 740Le, X5 xDrive40e and i8 sports car.

Design

The 530e offered locally will be in a Sports Line trim that features LED headlights for both low and high-beam, side lights, as well as daytime running lights. At the front, the air stream kidney grille works to better aerodynamics by opening and closing based on the situation. Distinguishable differences between this PHEV and the 530i has to be the i logo below the vehicle’s left fender charging port, the eDrive logo on the C-Pillars and at the rear, the 530e badge.

Power

Total power output from the 530e is 252 hp and 420 Nm of torque – split between 184 hp and 320 Nm from the 2.0-litre turbo engine and a 113 hp and 250 Nm electric motor. Similar to the 330e, positioning the electric motor ahead of the eight-speed transmission allows the ratios to be used in all-electric mode. Zero to hundred from a standstill takes just 6.2-seconds and best yet, fuel consumption is only 2.0-litres per 100 km with an interestingly low CO2 emission of only 46 g/km.

Battery Power

The 530e Sport is able to provide an all-electric driving range of up to 48 km with a maximum speed of up to 140 km/h. Similarly to the brand’s other PHEV range, driving modes of Auto eDrive, Max eDrive and Battery Control – the latter mode allows the driver to set the charge level for the battery manually. The value can be adjusted between 30 to 100 per cent of maximum charge to allow that proportion of the battery’s capacity to be reserved for all-electric driving later on.

If you don’t have BMW’s iWallbox that can charge the 530e fully in about three hours, the standard three-pin home unit can do so too, taking under five-hours.

Features

As seen currently on the G11 7 Series and G30 5 Series, the Adaptive mode joins BMW’s traditional Driving Experience Control system of Comfort, Sport and Eco Pro. Adaptive mode works alongside Dynamic Damper Control (DDC) and Navigation System Professional to tie steering, gearbox, throttle and suspension to adapt the driving style to the route ahead.

BMW’s Connected app for owners allow them to monitor the performance of the car, charge levels, locations of charging stations, distance covered on electric power and amount of petrol saved, apart from controlling the interior auxiliary air conditioning function from a smartphone.

Price

Available in Bluestone Metallic, Mediterranean Blue, Alpine White and Black Sapphire for exterior colours, interior leather options are Dakota Cognac or Dakota Black. Owners will have ChargeNow mobility services via ChargEV platform for a year, apart from the five-year unlimited mileage warranty, five-year free scheduled maintenance and two-year tyre warranty. The 530e Sport is locally assembled and priced at RM 343,800 on the road without insurance, joining the 530i M Sport.
