UMW Toyota has announced an expansion of the Special Service Campaign (SSC) to replace the inflator modules of the front passenger side airbag for Toyota Vios, Corolla Altis and Alphard's sold in Malaysia.
There are approximately 21,000 vehicles involved manufactured from January 2013 to December 2014 sold by UMW Toyota. This SSC is an expansion of the earlier campaigns announced by Toyota Motor Corporation.
The defect is in line with the global Takata airbag recall that results in propellant degradation from prolonged exposure to high humidity, temperatures and high temperature cycling. The inflator contains non-desiccated, phase stabilised ammonium nitrate propellant that may cause the rupture in the module, with metal fragments passing through the airbag, resulting in serious injury of death.
Parts for this SSC is currently being sourced by Toyota Motor Corporation and when available, UMW Toyota will notify owners for the necessary replacements that should take about one to three hours at an authorised Toyota service centre. All costs will be borne by UMW Toyota.
Toyota asserts that the safety of their customers is top priority, and is concerned about the safety of Toyota owners involved in the SSC. Owners involved in the SSC should contact any authorised Toyota service centre, call Toyota Freephone at 1800-8-869682 (TOYOTA), or visit Toyota's Special Service Campaign webpage here to check if their vehicle is involved through the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
