This Is The All-New BMW 8 Series

It is finally here, the new BMW 8 Series Coupe brings a second chapter to BMW’s first E31 gran tourer that ended its production at the turn of the last millennia. The primary development objective for the new 8 Series Coupe is thrilling driving dynamics. Body, powertrain and suspension were honed to achieve the supreme agility and poise of a top-class sports car.

Exterior Design

The exterior design of the new 8 Series Coupe exudes a very modern form of sporting appeal beautifully blended with an air of exclusiveness and sensual allure. The expressive surface design of the exterior body shell emphasises the dynamic character of the new 8 Coupe.

Furthermore, the car’s low-slung design, with a slim window graphic and a roofline flowing into the rear with distinctive “double-bubble” contouring are the defining elements of the new 8 Coupe. The exterior dimensions are 4,843 mm in length, 1,902 mm in width, 1,341 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,822 mm.

Slim headlights, optional BMW Laserlight

The new 8 Series comes as standard with the slimmest headlights of any BMW model to date. BMW Laserlight with variable road illumination and Selective Beam is optional. The Laserlight offers a high-beam range of around 600 metres.

Interior: Sporty, Relaxed & Luxurious

On the inside, the newly developed sports seats are upholstered as standard in Vernasca leather. With the low seating position of both rear seats, it has been possible to design the head restraints as an integral part of the backrests. The luxurious character of the new 8 Series Coupe is further enhanced with top quality optional extras like BMW Display Key, climate seats, Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System and more.

New BMW Operating System 7.0-inch display and control concept

The new Operating System 7.0-inch display and control concept is standard. A flat menu structure has been optimised for touch control permits to all settings and functions. Customisable and personalised displays can be called up in both the instrument cluster and the 10.25-inch Control Display. To enable multimodal interaction, the driver has a choice of using the i-Drive Controller, the touch display, voice control, gesture control or buttons on the steering wheel.

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional also comprises a fully-digital instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch display. The BMW Connected personal mobility assistant is available for seamless connectivity between the vehicle and digital devices. The digital services in the new 8 Coupe also include hazard warnings, “over-the-air” software upgrading, the integration of Microsoft Office 365 and Skype for Business. The BMW Digital Key allows customers to unlock the car and start the engine using a smartphone.

Incredible Power Delivery with a New Petrol V8 & Straight 6 Diesel

The M850i xDrive Coupe has a 4.4-litre engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology. The new V8 is now able to generate 530 hp, running between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm, with a maximum torque of 750 Nm. It also accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7-seconds.

The 3.0-litre six cylinder in-line diesel unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology delivers a maximum output of 320 hp and a peak torque of 680 Nm. Its performance characteristics permit relaxed cruising at low engine speeds, enabling the car to do the century sprint in 4.9-seconds.

Eight-speed Steptronic Sport Transmission & BMW xDrive

The engine transfer power to a new, improved version of the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. It has increased ratio spread, and the optimised hydraulic control produce sportier gear shifts at the same time enhancing its efficiency and smoothness.

Elsewhere, the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system operates more efficiently thanks to its rapid, precise and full variable distribution of torque between front and rear wheels. It also maximises traction and handling stability of the car.

Chassis

Optimised weight, a low centre of gravity, well-balanced axle load distribution provides all the right ingredients to harness the dynamic potential of its engine. Torsion struts on the double-wishbone front axle and load-bearing strut fitted to the five-link rear axle optimise stiffness to the body.

The standard equipment for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe includes Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. Integral Active Steering also reduces the turning circle when manoeuvring, increasing agility when changing lanes or taking corners at high speeds. The optional active roll stabilisation feature gives the car even sportier handling characteristics, thus improving agility and handling stability when cornering.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

For the safety and comfort of the new 8 Series Coupe, there is Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Lane Change Warning and Lane Departure Warning systems. This also adds BMW Night Vision and Crossing traffic warning. Besides steering, the Parking Assistant takes over the job of controlling accelerator and brakes. With Reversing Assistant also, it makes it possible to reverse easily for a distance of up to 50 metres by steering the vehicle back along the path it drove forward.

BMW M Performance, M Sport package & M Technic Sport Package

BMW M850i xDrive Coupe includes M Sport brakes with 20-inch M light-alloy wheels with high performance tyres. The BMW M Performance model is recognisable by Cerium Grey exterior highlights, an M rear spoiler and illuminated door sills bearing the model name.
