Toyota
All-New Vios
UMW Toyota Malaysia has taken the opportunity to preview the 2019 Toyota Vios. The front exterior moves away from the current generation look, to a sleeker and sharper fascia that continues to the rear. Inside, the instrument cluster will include a 4.2-inch Multi Information Display, while the infotainment system will be a new DVD-AVX unit that can be linked to compatible smartphones using the USB mirroring, with additionally Bluetooth and more connectivity.
Powertrain is a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder DOHC with Dual VVT-I with 106 hp and 140 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm mated to a 7-speed Sport Sequential Shiftmatic CVT. In terms of safety, there’s seven airbags across all variants, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear-Cross Traffic Alerts depending on model. Three variants will be available in 1.5J, E and G, with prices of RM 77,200, RM 81,200 and RM 87,300 respectively.
All-New Camry
Toyota Malaysia is calling the new Camry the “Beautiful Monster”. Now officially launched, the eighth generation Camry built on Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform that has better stability, agility and safety. At launch, only one variant option is available, which is a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder engine with an output of 182 hp and 235 Nm of torque at 4,100 rpm paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. This sole variant has enough equipment to be Toyota’s local sedan flagship, with leather powered front seats, nine-speaker JBL sound system, 10-inch colour head-up display, Qi wireless charger, and Toyota’s Safety Sense of active safety systems. This includes a Lane Departure Alert with steering assist, Dynamic Cruise Control, Pre-Collision System, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and 7-Airbags. The all-new Camry is fully imported and is priced at RM 189,900 on-the-road without insurance.
Lexus
Lexus Malaysia has previewed the brand’s latest compact SUV, the UX. Built on the Global Architecture – Compact platform, the UX built to have a handling that is dynamic and sporty. Although the UX is the brand’s new entry compact SUV, it continues with the premium look and feel. The complete width of the tail lamp is not only aesthetically unique, but includes 120 LEDs and provides additional downforce to stabilise the vehicle. Inside, the interior trim includes washi ornamentation, which is uniquely crafted to mimic the soft grain of Japanese paper. In terms of meticulous detail, the LED-illuminated air vent knobs are wirelessly powered, and feature reflective mirror optics to create an illusion of depth.
Joining the UX is the new ES, which into its seventh generation is all-new. At the front, the elegant, sharp and graceful Spindle Grille headlines the sophisticated curves. Inside, the driver will be welcome with a large 12.3-inch EMV display with a 7-inch TFT full digital combination meter and accompanying Heads-up display. Rear passengers will have power reclining seats and controls to sunshade, audio and air conditioning built-into the central armrest. Like the UX, the ES will also come with Lexus’ Safety System+ of active safety including Pre-collision System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert and Adaptive High beam system.
Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia previews the latest Triton, with bookings now open. The new Triton’s front fascia features the company’s latest Dynamic Shield design language, with slim head and fog lamps that showcases a wider and futuristic look unlike any other pick-up in the market. Underneath, the engine will be the new 2.4-litre MIVEC turbodiesel unit producing 179 hp and 430 Nm of torque.
Power is mated to a new six-speed automatic. Active safety systems included are Forward Collision Mitigation, Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist and Auto High Beam. The Triton will be available in five variants with estimated prices starting from RM 100,000 to RM 140,000.
Ford
The long awaited Ford Ranger Raptor has finally been launched at KLIMS 2018. The ultimate off-road truck features the latest 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel outputting 210 hp and 500 Nm of torque mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. More than just a Ranger with added looks, the Raptor comes with Position Sensitive Damping shock absorbers manufactured by FOX, an innovative all-new Watt’s linkage rear suspension with coilover springs for the unbeaten path. Thanks to the increased height, water wading depth is 850 mm and so is approach and departure angles. Inside, there’s quite enough to satisfy the urban dweller including a 230-volt power point and Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Ranger Raptor is RM 199,888 on-the-road without insurance.
Joining the Ranger Raptor, visitors to the Ford booth at KLIMS 2018 will also get to feast their eyes on the 2019 Mustang. The facelift has aesthetic changes noticeable mostly at the front, with new lighting units in both the head and tail lamps. Inside the instrument gauge is now a 12-inch digital unit with themes and display customisation for Normal, Sport and Track modes. The 2.3 EcoBoost version will have the same 310 hp with more torque at 447 Nm, and the 5.0-litre V8 in the GT model has been increased to 454 hp and 556 Nm of torque at 4,600 rpm. The Mustang also gets a new 10-speed automatic transmission.
Hyundai
The Korean brand has showcased the all-new fourth generation Santa Fe and it is a looker. Offerings locally would be available in a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder petrol outputting 170 hp to a six-speed automatic, and a 2.2-litre diesel with 190 hp mated to an eight-speed auto. The front end design with slim headlamps that are similar to the brand’s smaller Kona SUV. Towards the rear, the 3D graphics from the tail lamps draw you into the design. Thanks to its size, the interior is well equipped and spacious for the seven-seater. Hyundai has opened the Santa Fe for booking starting at an estimate of RM 188,000 onwards.
Proton
With all the teases and previews, the public can now view Proton’s first X70 SUV in all available shades at KLIMS 2018. There will be four variants for the X70 – Standard 2WD, Executive 2WD, Executive AWD and Premium 2WD. Standard on all variants are the 1.8-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 181 hp and 285 Nm of torque from 1,700 to 4,400 rpm paired to a six-speed automatic. In terms of safety, all-variants get six-airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Isofix, and VSC. The top range Premium 2WD will have Advanced Driver Assistance Systems that comes with Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring and Autonomous Emergency Braking.
Kia
Taking centrestage at Kia’s booth is the all-new third generation Kia Cerato wrapped in chrome. The new Cerato has styling cues that are inspired by the brand’s larger and more powerful sedan, the Stinger GT. With front and rear designs noticeably sportier and aggressive, turn signal indicators are located separately from the main head and tail lamp units. At the front, it is mounted below where the air curtains are, while at the rear, the separate reverse and turn signals are beneath the LED tail lamps. This preview does not include a look into the interior and specs, but in Singapore, power is from a 1.6-litre Gamma MPi with 126 hp and 155 Nm of torque at 4,850 rpm mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
While not heavily mentioned, Kia Malaysia has the full facelifted range of the Sorento, Sportage, Optima GT and Picanto GT at KLIMS.
The brand has also took to update the Grand Carnival and Rio, with the latter now featuring a six-speed automatic transmission, replacing the four-speed on the previous.
Nissan
Visitors will be able to view the all-new Leaf, with its launch due sometime mid-2019. The new Leaf has some interesting numbers to go with it. Its design maintains the same drag coefficient as the previous generation at 0.28 cd. This makes the new Leaf even more aerodynamic than the Porsche 918 hypercar. But similarities end there. Power is rated at 148 hp and can reach the century sprint in about 8-seconds.
The new Leaf features a 40 kWh (kilowatt hour) lithium-ion battery that has a range of about 400km. This means you could drive the Leaf on a full charge from KL to Penang before recharging. Best yet, with quick charging possible, you could summon the power of Zeus and charge it to 80 per cent in just 40 minutes.
The new Leaf will also feature an e-Pedal, a function once activated, allows drivers to start, accelerate and decelerate to a stop by increasing or decreasing the accelerator pedal. A function usually found in newer EV’s, e-Pedal is basically aimed at reducing fatigue during creeping traffic by allowing the driver to use the accelerator pedal alone, as opposed to switching between the throttle and brakes. But fret not, the new Leaf still features conventional pedal driving.
Citroën
The C3 Aircross is a quirky compact SUV with interesting lines. Following the theme of squircle shapes which are present throughout the car, including rims, the Aircross is the latest from the French brand. Underneath, power is from a 1.2-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder unit developing 110 hp and 205 Nm of torque at 1,500 rpm to a six-speed automatic. The headunit is compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and has MirrorLink. In terms of safety, the Aircross has six-airbags, Brake Assist, ABS with EBD, Stability Control, Isofix and Lane Departure Warning. Naza Euro Motors is expected to launch the Aircross next year.
DS
The DS 7 Crossback is probably a car that would be a fresh look for many visitors. Design elements are truly unique to DS, including the 3D diamond graphics with depth from the tail lamps. Following the brand’s logo, the diamond theme is very prominent throughout the DS 7. From the digital instrument cluster, switches, door panels and more. Here’s a fun fact, a special ‘Presidential’ edition DS 7 Crossback was chosen as the inauguration car for French President Emmanuel Macron, driven for the first time in public on an official ceremony just a couple months after its launch.
