Driving Performance Made in Malaysia, that is the headline of Mercedes-Benz’ latest AMG duo launched last night. The German marque is the first manufacturer in Malaysia to locally assemble luxury performance cars – the Mercedes-AMG C 43 Sedan and GLC 43 SUV.
Is there a difference between the CKD and CBU versions?
There isn’t. Specifications are identical for the new CKD models in trim and mechanics. What isn’t is the new price which is definitely a plus for those looking to get these AMG duos. The C 43 is priced at RM 408,888 while the GLC 43 is at RM 468,888. This represents a RM 91,000 and RM 70,000 less respectively than the CBU units previously offered.
What is underneath?
If you’re all about performance, it is definitely a treat! Both AMGs are powered by a 3.0-litre V6 Biturbo engine with an output of 362 hp and 520 Nm of torque. All this is mated to the 9G-Tronic transmission which sends power to the brand’s 4Matic all-wheel drive system. Century sprint is 4.7-seconds for the C 43 and 4.9-seconds for the GLC 43. Mercedes states that the engine cylinder liner is coated with Nanoslide, a tough and wear-resistant coating used in their Formula One engines for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team.
How is the ride?
The C 43 features the AMG Ride Control sports suspension with modes of “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sports Plus”. On the GLC 43, the system is the Air Body Control air suspension that is put together with the ADS Plus Adaptive Damping system with the similar modes of “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sports Plus”. In terms of drive characteristics, both vehicles feature the AMG Dynamic Select in “Eco”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sports Plus” and “Individual” that changes the engine, transmission and steering response. Drivers have the option of also going manual mode via the “M” button for paddle shifters fun.
Are these AMGs distinguishable from the standard series models?
Yes they are. For both, the AMG Line exterior at the front includes the diamond grille with chrome pins and the AMG lettering, the Biturbo 4Matic badge at the front wings, high-gloss black trim as well as the AMG 5-twin spoke light alloy wheels (19-inch for the C 43 and 21-inch on the GLC 43).
On the inside, both vehicles follow the brand’s current interior layout according to its model series. From the flattened bottom steering wheel with red contrasting topstitching as well as the seat covers, door centre panels and upper dashboard furnished similarly, sports seats and AMG instrument cluster, there’s a touch of that AMG DNA inside both these performance cars.
