Honda City Overview

The Honda City is arguably the most popular B-segment sedan in the country thanks to its reputation as a practical and spacious car. It’s also one of the few cars in its segment that offers a hybrid version, making it among the cheapest hybrid cars in the market.

General Information

Honda City Variants

There are four variants of the Honda City in Malaysia. The 1.5 S, 1.5 E, and 1.5 V are fully petrol variants while the 1.5 RS is a hybrid variant. All are powered by a 1.5L, 4-cylinder i-VTEC engine while the hybrid model has a 1.5L 4-cylinder i-VTEC Atkinson Cycle engine paired with a hybrid motor.

Honda City Pricing

The price of a new Honda City in Malaysia starts from RM74,191.27 for a 1.5 S, RM81,664.82 for a 1.5 E, RM86,561.45 for a 1.5 V, and RM105,950.45 for a 1.5 RS.

Colors Available

There are five colours available for the petrol version of the Honda City; Passion Red Pearl, Platinum White Pearl, Lunar Silver Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic, and Crystal Black Pearl. The Hybrid version on the other hand is available in three colours; Passion Red Pearl, Platinum White Pearl, and Modern Steel Metallic.

Honda City Basic Features

Interior

The interior of the Honda City is decently equipped, especially on the higher range variants. All variants have an ECON button, smart entry with push start button, rear air conditioning ventilation, steering wheel switch audio controls, and 60:40 rear folding seats. The 1.5 E,V, and RS variants get remote engine start and cruise control while paddle shifters are only available on the 1.5 E and V variants. Also, the Hybrid 1.5 RS is the only one to get a deceleration selector paddle.

The Honda City has different upholstery depending on the variants as well. The 1.5 S and E variants get urethane steering wheel and gear knob, with fabric upholstery. The 1.5 V and RS variants instead get leather wrapped steering wheel and gear knob, with the 1.5 V getting leather upholstery throughout and the 1.5 RS getting half leather upholstery. 

Exterior

Being the lower variants, the Honda City 1.5 S and E get projector halogen headlights while the 1.5 V and RS get LED auto headlights. The 1.5 V and RS also get LED front fog lights while the two lower variants do not. Across the range, there are LED daytime running lights, LED rear combi lights, side mirrors with turning lights, and a shark fin antenna. All variants get chrome outer door handles except the 1.5 S which has body-colored door handles.

Cabin Space

The Honda City has ample space in the cabin for five adults and an impressive 519-liter boot on the fully petrol versions. The Hybrid version has a smaller, 410-liter boot as additional space is allocated for the hybrid battery. However, the rear seats are non-folding so the boot is not expandable. The car measures 4,533 mm long, 1,748 mm wide, and 1,467 mm tall.

Infotainment system

The Honda City in Malaysia has an adequate infotainment system with the 1.5 S getting a standard audio system while the 1.5 E,V, and RS get an eight-inch display audio system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity. All variants also support Bluetooth and Hands-Free Telephone (HFT). The 1.5 S variant has only one USB port while the rest have two. Music is played on four speakers in the 1.5 S and E variants while the 1.5 V and RS have eight speakers.

Honda City Driving Performance

The 1.5L petrol, 4-cylinder DOHC i-VTEC engine on the fully petrol variants produces a maximum power of 121 PS (89 kW) at 6,600 rpm and a maximum torque of 145 Nm (14.8 kg-m) at 4,300 rpm. The 1.5 RS Hybrid variant has the 1.5L engine paired with an electric motor. This engine produces a maximum power of 98 PS (72 kW) from 5,600 to 6,400 rpm and a maximum torque of 127 Nm (13.0 kg-m) from 4,500 to 5,500 rpm, whereas the electric motor produces a maximum power of 109 PS (80 kW) from 3,500 to 8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 253 Nm (25.8 kg-m) from 0 to 3,000 rpm. The 1.5 S and E variants can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.2 seconds,the 1.5 V does it 10.4 seconds, and the 1.5 RS does it in 9.9 seconds. Fuel consumption of the Honda City is impressive at 5.4 L/100km for the fully petrol variants and only 3.6 L/100km for the hybrid variant.

Honda City Safety Features

The Honda City in Malaysia is equipped with all the safety features that drivers need. It comes standard with four airbags, with the 1.5 V and RS having six instead. All variants also have a seatbelt reminder for all occupants, ISOFIX, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Hill Start Assist (HSA), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), reverse sensors, and a security alarm with immobilizer. The Honda City 1.5 V and RS also get Honda LaneWatch Camera (LWC). The 1.5 RS gets Auto Brake Hold (ABH), Honda SENSING, and Honda CONNECT. However, buyers can opt to add Honda SENSING on the 1.5 V as well.

Honda SENSING

Honda SENSING is a full suite of driver-assistive technologies that can detect other vehicles and pedestrians, and take actions to avoid collisions. There are eight technologies in the Honda SENSING; Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Low-Speed Follow (LSF), and Auto High Beam (AHB).

Honda CONNECT

Honda CONNECT is a smart technology that connects your smartphone to your car. Honda CONNECT provides additional safety, security, and convenience through several smart features where it can send alerts to your phone when your car security alarm is triggered or when it exceeds a preset speed limit. You can even locate your car through the app, remotely lock and unlock the doors, control the air conditioner, and more.

The Honda City has been a top-selling model for Honda in Malaysia and it’s easy to see why. It has the looks, cabin and boot space, and is packed with features that are often seen on more expensive cars like Honda SENSING. Furthermore, the Hybrid variant is a very affordable option for buyers looking to get their first hybrid car.
