The 2018 Range Rover Velar Will Upshift The Luxury SUV Segment

The new Range Rover Velar has been launched nationwide and it looks to bring a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the Range Rover family. As a mid-size luxury SUV, the new Range Rover Velar is a masterpiece in terms of design and engineering. Its ‘reduction’ based design and elegant simplicity just makes it very much incomparable with other SUVs in its class.

Design

First things first, the Velar won the ‘Car Design of the Year’ at the 2018 World Car Award. And that award is certainly justified visually. Visible straight away from the design is that the Velar carries a seductive silhouette, flush deployable door handles, integrated rear spoiler. There are distinctive design cues from the front bumper to the rear of the vehicle, foil stamped grille and Matrix LED Headlights. The twin chrome exhaust finishers are integrated into the rear bumper as well.

A brief look at the overall features of the Velar.

The Velar is built with an aluminium-intensive monocoque (up to 81 per cent aluminium components). It’s light and stiff body is supported by double wishbone suspensions at the front and multi-link rear suspension to provide not only better handling, but superior ride comfort. The Velar comes equipped with 20-inch wheels, while the higher-spec Velar R-Dynamic comes with 21-inch wheels.

In-Car Technologies

The Velar features in-demand and up-to-date technologies for a car of the future. The Touch Pro Duo infotainment system which is the centrepiece of the Velar’s interior is powered by an Intel Quad Core Processor, features a high speed 60 GB Solid-State Drive and Ultra-Fast Ethernet Network. On the surface, the Touch Pro Duo features two 10-inch high-definition touchscreens, and the system allows multitasking of the two screens simultaneously. The new 12-inch Interactive Driver Display makes driving the Velar more interesting with its four visual themes and full-screen 3D navigation display. Other technology-advanced features include a Head Up Display, Interactive Driver Display and Navigation Pro.

Interior

Simplicity is at its best within the cabin of the Velar. The instrument panel's horizontal beam is the defining element of the interior's architecture. The angle in which it rakes back towards the windscreen underlines the SUVs driving characteristics. The slender air vents further reinforce the Velar’s reductive tech-enabled design.

In terms of seating comfort, the Velar’s front seats is a balance of performance with support and comfort. It has been designed to free up additional interior space and legroom as well as having been repositioned and built for ease of entry in and out of the cabin.

Onto the measurements, the Velar sits on top of the Evoque in terms of length, but is shorter than the Range Rover Sport by 47 mm. Also, the Range Rover Velar stands at 1665 mm, 115 millimetres short of the Range Rover Sport. The width of the Velar is just 75 mm shy of the Range Rover Sport.

Drivetrain

As with Range Rovers of this class, the drive is directed to all four wheels, through intelligent, torque on-demand all-wheel-drive (AWD) system with Intelligent Driveline Dynamics. Depending on road conditions, it can make the transition from 100 per cent rear bias to fully locked in only 165 milliseconds; transient torque delivery to the front axle can take as little as 100 milliseconds. This makes the all-wheel drive system incredibly responsive in all driving conditions.

Power from the Ingenium powertrain is matched to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and is fitted with the P250 powertrain which has 247 hp. The maximum torque is 365 Nm and can be maintained from 1,200 rpm up to 4,500 rpm. The century sprint for the Velar is just 6.7 seconds. On the road, it can return an impressive 7.6-litres/ 100km and 173 g/km CO2 on the European combined cycle (NEDC).

Onto the pricing, the Velar (P250) costs RM 529,900, while the R-Dynamic (P250) starts from RM 588,800. The Velar is available in eight exterior colours that includes Fuji White, Yulong White, Corris Grey, Santorini Black, Kaikoura Stone, Firenze Red, Silicon Silver and Carpathian Grey. There are also five interior options of Ebony/Ebony, Acorn, Vintage Tan/Ebony, Eclipse/Ebony and Light Oyster/Ebony. For more info, visit Land Rover Malaysia.
