The new BMW X4 2019 – Price in Malaysia, Specs and Reviews

BMW Malaysia has launched the all-new second generation BMW X4 Sports Activity Coupe (SAC). Following from the previous generation F26 BMW X4 that was locally assembled from 2016, we’re happy to report that this new one will also be locally assembled in Kulim, Kedah.

Performance

The X4 launched comes in the xDrive30i M Sport variant and is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol that outputs 252 hp with 350 Nm of torque from 1,450 to 4,800 rpm mated to an 8-speed Steptronic sport automatic transmission. Drive goes to all four wheels in xDrive fashion. Further details include a century sprint time of 6.3-seconds and a listed 7.8-litres of fuel consumption per 100 km. Oh and there’s Launch Control as well.

Exterior Design

Distinguishable from the front is the larger kidney grille that follows up from the latest X3 that comes with the active air stream – as part of the aerodynamics that opens and closes the vents depending on air intake and fuel consumption. Move lower and the redesigned air intakes in the middle and sides are also new. When it comes to the lights, the adaptive LED headlight designs take on the latest Hexagonal curved look. The fog lamps are now rectangular shaped, moving on from the circular on the previous. All this is accentuated by the M Sport kit, which features the high gloss Shadow line.

The coupe roofline is now flatter when viewed from the side profile. Towards the rear, the new slender LED tail lamps have a 3D surface design on the L strip. Dimension wise, the new X4 is larger on all angles except for the height – 81 mm longer, 37 mm wider, 3 mm shorter and 52 mm longer wheelbase.

Interior Design

The cabin is in line with the latest G01 BMW X3 and follows a familiar layout. Because the X4 comes in the M Sport kit, there’s door sill finishers with M designation, interior trim finished with the Aluminium Rhombicle with Pearl Chrome, M leather steering wheel with paddle shifters and Vernasca leather upholstery. Driver instrument cluster is a digital 12.3-inch unit, while the 10.25-inch freestanding control display is the Navigation System Professional that can be operated via voice, touch, gesture or iDrive controller. The unit also comes with Apple CarPlay support. Sound comes from a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround system. BMW has also added kneepads on the centre console area for better driver support during cornering. Look up and the panoramic glass roof opens the spaciousness for all passengers.

As for boot space, it is stated as 525-litres and expands to 1,430-litres with the rear seats down. The backrest split is 40:20:40.

Convenience and Driver Assistance

Driver Assistance includes a Heads-up Display for better focus, Cruise Control with braking and Parking Assistant for automatic parking for parallel and perpendicular positions. The tailgate is electric and comes with the Comfort Access with contactless opening and closing.

Safety

Six Airbags come standard which includes front driver and passenger as well head and side, front to rear curtain airbags. The rest of the driving assists include DSC, DTC, Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Brake Control, ABS and Brake Assist. There’s Isofix at the rear seats as well.

Price

BMW will offer the X4 in shades of Alpine White, Carbon Black, Flamenco Red and Phytonic Blue with the Black vernasca leather in all shades. If you want to stand out, there’s the Tacora Red Vernasca leather but it’s only exclusive to the White and Black colours. The X4 xDrive30i M Sport is priced at RM 380,000 on-the-road without insurance and includes BMW’s 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, free scheduled service and tyre warranty programme.

But… it doesn’t end there.

There’s two more things…

BMW X2 M35i

BMW Malaysia also previewed the X2 M35i. The smallest Sports Activity Coupe features the most powerful 2-litre TwinPower Turbo engine from the brand to date. The 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine outputs 306 hp and 450 Nm of torque from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm. Mated to an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with launch control, the drive goes to four wheels via the xDrive all-wheel drive system. Zero to hundred times? A mere 4.9-seconds.

Underneath, the X2 M35i features an M Sport suspension system that has been specifically tuned for the SAV. A first for this M Performance vehicle is the M Sport Differential installed in the front axle gear that reduces traction loss in the front wheels during very dynamic driving manoeuvers. The brakes have also been upgraded, with short braking distances.

Visually, the top range X2 gets the M Performance elements throughout the car. The kidney grille and exterior mirror caps come in Cerium Grey. There’s an M spoiler at the rear and the two tailpipes at the rear are M Sport specific exhaust system. Alloy wheels are 20-inch sized and are also Cerium Grey bicoloured.

Comfort features include the exclusive M Sport seats for better lateral support yet maintaining the highest level of comfort. Sound system is the Harman Kardon 12-speaker unit, and the Navigation Plus headunit is an 8.8-inch touch unit.

As the X2 M35i is a preview alongside the X4, it will only be available in showrooms in July 2019 at an estimated price of RM 400,000.

BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport

The new X5 is finally here with an evolution in design. The fourth generation G05 was also previewed alongside the X2 M35i and X4 xDrive30i M Sport. Visually more elegant and athletic in size than the previous models, the new X5 takes on a large kidney grille at the front flanked by new slim Adaptive LED headlights. Towards the back the new 3D surface wrap-around LED taillights provide more character to the shape. The X5 sits on 20-inch light alloy wheels with M Sport brakes with dark blue M logo calipers. All this and the M Sport package that comes together, makes the new X5 a visually commanding winner.

Size wise, the new X5 has grown in all areas. Length is up 36 mm, width 66 mm, height 19 mm and wheelbase 42 mm more. Luggage space is also more spacious at 650-litres and up to 1,870-litres seats folded.

Of all, what’s underneath the hood is the winner. The 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder turbo pushes out 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 5,200 rpm and is mated to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. Drive goes to all four-wheels via xDrive. Despite its size, the new X5 can get to a hundred from standstill in just 5.5-seconds and has a rated fuel consumption numbers at 9.2-litres per 100 km.

Inside, the cabin features the latest next generation layout seen in the G20 3 Series. The driver instrument cluster is a 12.3-inch Live Cockpit Professional that showcases geometric bands as opposed to the traditional circular dials. The Navigation Professional headunit running on OS 7 is the latest. Of course the redesigned centre console controller area with the new gear shifter and iDrive controller is equipped. For the driver the Heads-up Display is now 70 per cent larger than before.

Driver assistance systems also include BMW’s Personal CoPilot, a cruise control system with braking function, Lane Departure Warning with steering assist, Frontal Collision Warning with braking, Rear Cross Traffic Warning and Rear Collision Prevention. The highlight Park Assist with memory seen in the 3 Series is also on board here, with the car remembering the last 50 metres of the drive to the parking space.

You will be able to get the X5 in Mineral White, Black Sapphire, Artic Grey and Phytonic Blue. Upholstery options are the Black with Aluminium Tetragon for Mineral White and Black Sapphire while the choice of Leather Coffee with Fineline Stripe Wood is available for the Artic Grey and Phytonic Blue. The exclusive is the Leather Cognac only on the Mineral White.

Price for the X5 xDrive40i M Sport is also estimated at RM 640,000 and will be at showrooms in August 2019.

BMW will be showcasing an experience with the all-new X5 and X2 at the BMW X Crew event that will be happening at Plaza Arkadia, Desa Park City from the 21st to 23rd of June 2019.
