Proton & X70 Edit
The Proton X70 is the first C-segment sports utility vehicle (SUV) from Malaysia’s national carmaker, Proton. It’s based on the Geely Boyue but has received several updates from Proton including in the styling and tuning. The X70 was launched in 2018 with initial units being fully imported. From 2020 onwards, all models are locally assembled Complete Knockdown (CKD) units.
It goes up against SUVs like the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5. However, the attractive price of the new and used Proton X70 also means that it can compete against smaller SUVs from foreign brands like the Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross.
For the price, the Proton X70 offers a lot of technology and refinement. Here are its specifications:
The Proton X70 was initially introduced with a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder TGDI engine. In 2022, it received its first update, also called Minor Change 1 (MC1) by Proton whereby it’s now fitted with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder TGDI engine. With the introduction of a new engine, Proton has updated the selection of variants for the SUV. However, with the smaller engine, you still get excellent design, performance, and interior refinement in the Proton X70, with improved fuel economy.
Then in 2023, Proton updated the X70 lineup again, adding the 1.5 TGDI Premium X 2WD. This sits below the range-topping 1.8 TGDI Premium 2WD. The new Premium X variant is identical to the 1.5 TGDI Premium 2WD but adds a powered sunroof and an additional color exclusive to this variant – Quartz Black.
Being already five years old, there have been reports that the Proton X70 facelift will be announced soon. Until then, here are the six variants available in Malaysia now:
The Proton X70 was the first Proton to come with an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) with features like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Front Collision Warning (FCW). Here are the Proton X70 safety features you should know:

The Proton X70 presents a major step up for Proton in terms of cabin refinement. The materials used in the X70’s interior are of high quality, from the soft-touch plastic around the cabin, brushed-metal-like panels on the dashboard, to the Nappa leather seats. The digital driver’s instrument cluster looks modern while the infotainment display is smooth and responsive. Furthermore, the cabin is spacious with ample head- and legroom.
There is also plenty of storage space and USB charging ports around the cabin, making it a very practical space. If you’re looking for an SUV with an upscale, practical interior, the Proton X70 is a great choice.
The most notable difference between the Proton X70 and X50 is their size. The X70 is larger than its smaller sibling with a larger cabin and boot space. For carrying cargo, the X70 has a 512-liter boot vs the X50’s 330-liter boot. Next, the X70 has a more refined styling while the X50 is more sporty. This extends to the ride quality with the X70 being more comfortable and compliant on the road and the X50 being more nimble.
Additionally, the Proton X70 has the option of a 1.8-liter engine while the X50 is only available with a 1.5-liter powerplant. Both SUVs don’t compromise in terms of safety, having similar safety features including six airbags and ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) features such as adaptive cruise control (ACC) and autonomous emergency braking (AEB).
All CARSOME Certified cars are quality assured through a stringent 175-point inspection and professional refurbishment. Additionally, each used Proton X70 comes with a fixed price with no hidden fees, a five-day money-back guarantee, and one-year warranty.
