Mazda 2 Overview

The Mazda 2 sedan and hatchback are Mazda’s entry-level B-segment offerings that incorporate the brand’s Kodo design language. The Mazda 2 also has the iconic Skyactiv-Vehicle Dynamics and G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus) giving it unrivaled driving dynamics in this segment.

General Information

Mazda 2 Variants

There are two variants of the Mazda 2 in Malaysia; the sedan and hatchback, with both being named Mazda 2 Skyactiv-G High. They are powered by a 1.5L engine and have similar finishing as well as features.

Mazda 2 Pricing

In Malaysia, the price of a new Mazda 2 sedan and hatchback are identical. Both start from RM100,770.

Colors Available

Buyers in Malaysia can choose from eight shared colors when purchasing a Mazda 2. They are Soul Red Crystal, Machine Gray, Snowflake White Pearl, Eternal Blue, Sonic, Jet Black, Ceramic Metallic, and Titanium Flash. The hatchback, on the other hand, has two exclusive colors which are Polymetal Gray and Deep Crystal Blue.

Mazda 2 Basic Features

Interior

The Mazda 2 has among the most premium interiors in the segment. It has plenty of soft-touch leather surfaces from the dashboard to the door trims, while the seats have a blue-gray leather trim. Both the Mazda 2 hatchback and sedan have the same interior features. For starters, the Mazda 2 has a leather steering wheel (tilt and telescopic) with paddle shifters, audio controls, and Bluetooth switches. It also has a single-zone auto climate control, one-touch (up and down) power window with anti-pinch on the driver’s side window, an engine start/stop button, reverse camera with distance and width guide lines, and a Sport Mode drive selection switch.

Exterior

On the exterior, the Mazda 2 has LED lights all-around with LED headlights with signature illumination and auto leveling, and LED daytime running lights (DRLs). The sedan has a bulb rear fog light while the hatchback has LED instead. It also gets variable-intermittent windshield wipers and Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry. The Mazda hatchback gets additional exterior trim with roof-mounted shark-fin antenna and a rear roof spoiler.

Cabin Space

The cabin space of the Mazda 2 is decent though it is not class-leading. The Mazda 2 sedan measures 4,340 mm long, 1,695 mm wide, and 1,470 mm tall with a 410-liter boot. The hatchback, on the other hand, measures 4,065 mm long, 1,695 mm wide, and 1,495 mm tall with a 280-liter boot which is about the smallest in class. However, both variants have 60:40 folding rear seats for extra cargo space.

Infotainment system

The Mazda 2 features a seven-inch Mazda Connect Infotainment System with Multi-Function Commander Control which is a control knob below the shift stick and Voice Command. The system has an AM/FM tuner, an auxiliary audio input jack, CD player, two USB ports, Bluetooth, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Mazda was among the first manufacturers to feature its Full-Color Active Driving Display (Heads-Up Display), and the Mazda 2 has it. It shows the current speed and important navigation info within the driver’s driving view.

Mazda 2 Driving Performance

Both the Mazda 2 sedan and hatchback are powered by a SKYACTIV-G 1.5L engine with VVT mated to a SKYACTIV-DRIVE six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode. It produces a maximum power of 115 PS at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 149 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The estimated fuel economy of the Mazda 2 is 5.3 L/100 km.

Mazda 2 Safety Features

The Mazda 2 in Malaysia features advanced safety technology such as the Mazda i-Stop Idling Technology and G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus). i-Stop Idling is a smart technology that turns off the engine when the car stops and restarts it when the car starts moving again. This feature saves fuel, especially in stop-and-go traffic.

GVC Plus is Mazda’s vehicle dynamics control technology that improves the handling of the car for better control on winding and slippery roads, as well as when avoiding obstacles. However, GVC Plus also refines the overall ride quality which provides better comfort for all passengers.

Other standard safety features on the Mazda 2 include SRS airbags for the front driver and passenger, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Traction Control System (TCS), Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), Walk Away Lock, and an Engine Immobilizer Anti-Theft System. Inside, the car has ISOFIX and seat belts with pretensioner, load limiter, and height-adjustable anchorages.

The Mazda 2 has a steeper price tag and less space than rivals in the same segment. However, it boasts premium interior trims with an abundance of soft-touch surfaces and superior handling making it a great driver’s car.
