Kia & Rio Edit
The Kia Rio is a B-segment compact hatchback first produced in 1999. It’s also known as the Kia K2 in other markets and is currently in its fourth generation. It goes against other compact hatchbacks such as the Honda Jazz, Ford Fiesta, and Mazda 2.
Kia Rio Variants
There is only one Kia Rio variant in Malaysia, with the latest model offered here being the fourth-generation Kia Rio EX hatchback introduced in 2017 and updated in 2018.
Kia Rio Pricing
The price of a Kia Rio hatchback in Malaysia starts from RM79,888.
The Kia Rio is offered in seven colors; Clear White, Sporty Blue, Mighty Yellow, Aurora Black Pearl, Signal Red, Perennial Grey, and Silky Silver.
The interior of the Kia Rio in Malaysia has modern yet classy touches with dual-tone piano black and chrome trim. The steering wheel with audio controls and gear knob are wrapped in leather giving them a premium feel while the seats are well-cushioned and wrapped in fabric. Other features include a 4.2-inch supervision instrument cluster with ambient temperature display, digital clock in the audio system, driver’s window with auto up/down and anti-pinch safety function, and a 12 V power outlet on the front console. There are also two USB charging ports; one on the front console and another on the rear center console. Additionally, there is automatic climate control with a cluster ioniser and a sunroof which give the Kia Rio an upmarket feel.
The Kia Rio hatchback sports Kia’s signature wide and slim “Tiger Nose” grille with a gloss black cover and chrome trim. It also has LED lights all-around with LED headlights, projection-type front fog lamps, U-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs), and stylish tri-arrow assembly LED taillights. The brake light is integrated into the body-colored roof spoiler. To help on rainy days, there are also automatic wipers.
Being a compact B-segment hatchback, the Kia Rio has decent albeit a bit tight space for five adults. It measures 4,065 mm long, 1,725 mm wide, and 1,450 mm tall. The boot space measures 325-liters which is expandable to 980-liters with the rear seats folded down.
The infotainment system on the Kia Rio is controlled on the 8-inch color LCD touchscreen. It supports Bluetooth multi-connection for phone calls and media streaming, USB input with iPod compatibility, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and wired/wireless Android Auto, both with voice recognition. Music is played through six speakers; four front and rear door speakers, as well as two front tweeters.
The Kia Rio is powered by a 1.4L naturally aspirated, Kappa MPI engine producing a maximum power of 100 PS at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 133 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The update in 2018 saw the Kia Rio get a new 6-speed automatic transmission, replacing a 4-speed automatic transmission. It has a fuel consumption of 6.0 L/100 km and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds.
The Kia Rio comes with the standard safety features including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist System (BAS), Rear Parking Sensors, rear ISOFIX, and 3-point Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts on all positions. It also has Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC), and six airbags. There are also reverse parking sensors and a rearview camera with dynamic parking guidelines.
The Kia Rio may be slightly dated, but it has the style and features one would expect from a hatchback at this price point. With its interior kit, compact size, and safety features, it makes for a great city car.
