The BMW 1 Series is a compact luxury hatchback. It was first manufactured in 2004 and is currently in its third generation. While the 1 Series previously served as BMW’s entry-level offering, BMW Malaysia now only offers the range-topping M Performance model which puts it in the same price range as the BMW 5 Series sedan. The current BMW 1 Series in Malaysia, goes against other luxury performance compact cars such as the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+, Audi TT, and Volkswagen Golf R.
Variants
There is only one variant of the BMW 1 Series on offer in Malaysia which is the BMW M135i xDrive which is the top-of-the-range variant in the series.

Colors Available
There are seven colors available on the BMW 1 Series. They are Alpine White, Black Sapphire Metallic, Melbourne Red Metallic, M Misano Blue Metallic, Skyscraper Grey Metallic, BMW Individual Storm Bay Metallic, and BMW Individual Frozen Pure Grey.
Interior
In the interior, the BMW 1 Series has twin 10.25-inch digital displays which are the BMW Live Cockpit Professional instrument display and the infotainment Control Display which is angled slightly towards the driver. It also has M Sport front seats, an M steering wheel with multifunction buttons and paddle shifters, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning, M seatbelts, and “Illuminated Boston” ambient lighting with mesh accent.
Exterior
As an M Performance vehicle, the M135i xDrive has various M styling details including an M aerodynamics package, M rear spoiler, a kidney grille with a Cerium Grey finished mesh design, and slanted exhaust tailpipes in Cerium Grey. It also has an M Sport suspension system and blue-colored M Sport brakes.
Cabin Space
The M135i xDrive is compact, measuring 4,319 mm long, 1,799 mm wide, and 1,434 mm tall. It also has a 380-liter boot which is impressive for a compact performance hatchback.
Infotainment system
The infotainment on the BMW M135i xDrive is controlled on the 10.25-inch touchscreen Control Display. It runs on BMW’s Operating System 7 and can also be controlled via the iDrive Touch Controller knob and via voice control. Ths system also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Complementing the infotainment system is a 464-watt Harman/Kardon 16-speaker sound system.
The engine in the BMW 1 Series M135i xDrive is the 2.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder petrol engine. It produces 306 PS of max power from 5,000 to 6,250 rpm and 450 Nm of max torque from 1,750 to 4,500 rpm. The car also has a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 4.8 seconds and a 250 km/h top speed.
The BMW M135i xDrive comes with all the standard safety features necessary in a modern car along with the BMW Driving Assistant package. This package includes lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front collision warning with brake intervention, as well as collision prevention. Other safety features worth noting are the six airbags, electronic stability control, and Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant.
With its performance and engaging driving dynamics, the BMW 1 Series M135i xDrive is a solid choice for drivers looking for a high-performance luxury hatchback. For buyers who want the entry-level non-M versions of the 1 Series, the second-hand car market is their best bet.
