Just yesterday, Wearnes, Bugatti’s official dealer partner locally, premiered the Chiron Sport in Malaysia. The opulent hypercar was first announced at the Geneva Motor Show in March and has appeared at the recent Fullerton Concours d’Elegance in Singapore. The Sport here denotes upgraded suspensions and 18 kg lighter than the standard Chiron.
Bugatti was established in 1909, with its headquarters today located in Molsheim, Alsace, France. The company’s founder Ettore Bugatti, was born and raised in Milan, Italy into a family that was an important Art Nouveau furniture and jewellery designer. Thanks to this, Bugatti’s were known to have great detail, engineering and artistic style.
The company’s modern renaissance is credited to the Bugatti Veyron, the Chiron’s predecessor with an impressive list of performance numbers, price and world records – the Super Sport being the fastest production car in the world, and the Grand Sport Vitesse as the world’s fastest production roadster. A total of 450 Veyron’s were made.
Today the Bugatti Chiron has taken the mantle of the brand forward. Unveiled at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the Chiron is named after Louis Chiron, a Monégasque racing driver that has achieved the most number of podium finishes for the brand.
In terms of numbers, the Chiron does not disappoint. These are the remarkable facts that make it a car unlike any other.
The Chiron’s engine is an 8.0-litre W16 quad-turbocharged unit that develops 1,479 hp and 1,600 Nm of torque.
Maximum torque of 1,600 Nm is achieved from 2,000 rpm all the way to 6,000 rpm, ensuring power at any rpm.
While your regular car has one catalytic converter and one radiator, the Chiron has six and 10 respectively. Also the engine receives more than 60,000-litres of air per minute at full capacity.
Maximum top speed is 420 km/h (electronically limited). But the car’s theoretical top speed is over 480 km/h.
The sprint from zero to 100 km/h requires only 2.5-seconds; to 193 km/h just 6.5-seconds and 305 km/h in under 14-seconds.
While the sprint speed is impressive, the acceleration at 80 km/h to 120 km/h is a mere 1.8-seconds.
The max rate of the third gear at 6,700 rpm is 200 km/h.
The size of the front brake discs are 16.5-inches in diameter.
At full speed, the Chiron will deplete its whole 100-litre fuel tank in less than seven minutes.
The speedometer’s top speed reading goes up to 500 km/h.
Nothing speaks exquisite audio than in the Chiron’s tweeters. The system is made by German audio specialist Accuton and features a one-carat diamond membrane in each tweeter. More than just a luxury add on, the diamonds provide crystal-clear sound when it comes to the highs.
The only component in the Chiron that was not subject to weight savings is the Bugatti logo in front of the vehicle. The logo weight is 155 grams which includes 140 grams of silver.
While the Chiron Sport features the same powertrain as the standard Chiron, the Sport features a new handling pack for a 10 per cent stiffer shock absorbers and a weight savings of 18 kg.
The 18 kg savings is from lighter rear window glass and exhaust deflector, new lightweight wheels, stabiliser and intercooler cover in carbon fibre and the world’s first carbon fibre windscreen wipers on a production car. The wipers save 1.4 kg from the previous and feature 3D-printed aluminium tips.
The Chiron Sport also adds Dynamic Torque Vectoring in the rear differential to help distribute torque to assist cornering. In tighter corners, the system will send more power to the outer wheels to help through the turn.
Visually, the Sport can be distinguished by the rounded quad tailpipes, Sport logos on the door sills and centre console. Inside the cabin, alcantara, leather and carbon fibre adorn the roof liner, seats, doors, steering column and dashboard. Customers also get to choose from a new set of colour and trim options.
Why choose the Sport over the standard Chiron? While the upgrades over the standard is minor for some, Bugatti says that the Sport goes around the Nardò Ring in Italy five seconds faster than the regular Chiron. Lets just say this Chiron Sport takes corners better.
The price? The Chiron Sport will cost €2.65-million (approx. RM 12.5-million) before taxes and customisation. Oh, and only 500 Chiron's will be made.
