The wait is now over, and electric cars came up on top! The new Volkswagen ID.4 is crowned as the World Car of the Year 2021, defeating the famous Honda e and Toyota Yaris, which came in second and third place respectively.

The Volkswagen ID.4 was voted as the winner by 93 distinguished international journalists from 28 countries that make up the World Car Awards jury panel. The votes were tabulated by KPMG and it is the fifth World Car of the Year (WCOTY) win for Volkswagen AG. The Volkswagen ID.4 is an all-electric SUV car that was praised by the jury for being environmentally friendly as it does not produce any direct Co2 emissions and for its technological advances like the IQ.DRIVE  (the car’s Advanced Drivers Assistance Technology) which enables hand-on-semi-autonomous capability.

The Honda e, which came in second place, is also the winner of the World Urban Car category in this year’s edition of the awards. This electric compact hatchback received 754 points, 17 points more than the Yaris (second) and 35 points more than Honda Jazz (third).

For the World Luxury Car Category, the W223 Mercedes-Benz S-Class bagged this year’s award (853 points), defeating the Polestar 2 (815 points) which came in second, and the Land Rover Defender (774 points) which came in third.

Meanwhile, the Porsche 911 Turbo won the World Performance Car category with 822 points, outpacing the Audi RS Q8 that came in second with 792 points and the Toyota GR Yaris that came in third with 773 points.

For the final category, the World Car Design of the Year award, the Land Rover Defender emerged as champion with 299 points. Every model that competed in this year’s World Car Awards was eligible for this title, but the second and third place was given to Honda e (239 points) and Mazda MX-30 (197 points) respectively.
