Porsche has claimed and set the fastest ever lap time at the N\u00fcrburgring with their latest 919 Hybrid Evo. How fast? A blistering 5 minutes and 19.55 seconds. Those are the numbers that five-time N\u00fcrburgring 24-hours winner Timo Bernhard took to cover the 20.8 km N\u00fcrburgring Nordschleife in Porsche\u2019s hybrid prototype race car.<\/p>\n

This new lap time is one for the record books and a stuff of legends. Because for 35 years, the fastest N\u00fcrburgring lap time of 6 minutes and 11.13 seconds was held by Stefan Bellof in a Rothmans Porsche 956 C.<\/p>\n

The car that has made history is an Evo version of the Porsche 919 Hybrid, a car that took an outright victory at the Le Mans 24-Hours and won the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2015, 2016 and 2017.<\/p>\n

How does it go so fast?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The magic of setting a new record that is 51-seconds faster than the previous is all due to weight, aerodynamics and power. Weighing in at only 849 kg, the Evo is undoubtedly lighter than a Perodua Myvi and also has a total system output of 1160 hp. The 919 is powered by a two-litre turbocharged V4-cylinder engine and two energy recovery systems \u2013 brake energy from the front axle combined with exhaust energy. The active aerodynamics also generate 50 per cent more downforce than the WEC model. Timo managed to drive the Evo up to a top speed of 369.4 km\/h.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the removal of the air-conditioning, windscreen wiper, several sensors, electronic race control devices, light systems and pneumatic jack system, the dry weight was reduced by 39 kg. In terms of rubber, Michelin also developed a special tyre compound for the 919 Evo that produces more downforce than a Formula One car.<\/p>\n
