The <\/span>Perodua Axia<\/span><\/a><\/span> is a car favored by driving schools and drivers of all ages thanks to its affordability and compact size. With the announcement of a new Perodua Axia for 2023, Perodua is packing this cute hatchback with more features than ever but that also comes with a higher price tag.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, how does it compare to the prior generation Axia from 2019? Let\u2019s find out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Price Bump for the 2023 Perodua Axia<\/span><\/h2>\n

Initial information for the 2023 Perodua Axia reveals that it will come in four variants \u2013 G, X, SE, and AV. That\u2019s two variants less than the <\/span>2019 Axia<\/span><\/a><\/span>. Curiously, the base E variant with the manual transmission has been dropped in the current brochure. The 2023 Axia G starts at RM38,600 followed by the Axia X at RM40,000, the Axia SE at RM44,000, and the Axia AV at RM49,500. That\u2019s a significant jump from the prices back in 2019 when the G was priced at RM33,490 and the AV at RM43,190.<\/span><\/p>\n

Engine & Performance<\/span><\/h2>\n

Perodua\u2019s<\/span><\/a><\/span> new Axia will be powered by a 1.0-liter EEV (energy efficient vehicle) engine that is most likely the same 1KR-VE three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine found in the 2019 Axia. It should also have a similar performance with 67 PS of power and 91 Nm of torque. The biggest change to come to the 2023 Axia is its new DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) platform which is lighter, with increased chassis rigidity giving it better handling and safety. The SE and AV variants now have Eco Idle and a Power mode which increases the engine\u2019s output response to provide better acceleration such as when overtaking on the highway.<\/span><\/p>\n

Better Fuel Consumption with a New Transmission<\/span><\/h3>\n

New for 2023, the Axia is equipped with a D-CVT (Dual-mode continuously variable transmission), replacing the four-speed automatic transmission. This new <\/span>transmission<\/span><\/span><\/a> is used in the latest Perodua vehicles including the <\/span>Ativa<\/span><\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Myvi<\/span><\/a><\/span>, and <\/span>Alza<\/span><\/a><\/span>. It\u2019s a split-gear CVT system that incorporates a gear drive into the CVT belt drive system to offer improved acceleration with less rubber band effect than other CVTs, improved quietness, and fuel efficiency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, the fuel consumption of the 2023 Axia is rated at 25.3 km\/L for the G and X variants, and up to 27.4 km\/L for the SE and AV variants. That\u2019s an improvement over the outgoing Axia\u2019s fuel consumption of 22.5 km\/L.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Exterior<\/span><\/h2>\n

On the exterior, the new <\/span>Perodua Axia<\/span><\/a><\/span> sports a more aggressive front fascia and more LED lighting. The X, SE, and AV variants now get LED headlamps while the base G variant still comes with halogen bulbs. Also new on the Axia SE and AV are LED daytime running lights. Electric folding side mirrors are now standard across the board as opposed to only being available on the SE variant onwards in the previous generation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of color, the 2023 Perodua Axia adds a new shade called Coral Blue alongside the existing Granite Grey, Lava Red, Glittering Silver, and Ivory White. The keyless entry system on the new Axia now uses a touch electrostatic sensor instead of an actual button but it\u2019s still unclear if it\u2019ll be available on all variants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Interior<\/span><\/h2>\n

Inside, the 2023 Axia is more refined than its predecessor with the most outstanding features being a new seven-inch TFT MID (multi-info display) and a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment display on the AV variant. These are big upgrades compared to the previous Axia AV with its basic instrument cluster and smaller touchscreen infotainment display.<\/span><\/p>\n

The G and X variants get a standard LCD MID, while the SE gets an LCD MID with a tachometer. If you want a touchscreen infotainment display on the lower variants, you\u2019ll be disappointed to know that they only come with a non-touchscreen radio. In terms of the seats, they are largely unchanged with fabric seats across the three lower variants and semi-leather seats on the AV.<\/span><\/p>\n

Safety Features<\/span><\/h2>\n

Compared to the <\/span>2019 Axia<\/span><\/a><\/span>, the 2023 version comes with better <\/span>safety features<\/span><\/a><\/span> across the board. For starters, vehicle stability control (VSC), and traction control (TRC) are now standard on all variants whereas it was previously unavailable on the Axia G. All variants now also get hill start assist (HSA), a new feature on the Axia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2023 Axia is also likely getting the full suite of <\/span>Perodua Smart Drive Assist (PSDA)<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0 which includes Advanced Safety Assist (A.S.A.), Driving Assist, Parking Assist, and Headlamp Assist, though it\u2019s not clear on which variant. For reference, the 2019 Axia AV didn\u2019t come with the full suite but had A.S.A 2.0, pre-collision warning and braking with pedestrian detection, front departure alert, and pedal misoperation control.<\/span><\/p>\n
