The car was based on a Mitsubishi model, The Lancer Fiore, after the Japanese car manufacturer agreed to a joint venture with Hicom or also known as Heavy Industries Corp of Malaysia Bhd to produce Malaysia\u2019s first car. Before long, The Saga quickly maneuvered its way into the hearts of many and made itself Malaysia\u2019s favourite car.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A game of Scrabble is all it Took<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fun fact, Proton Saga got its name from a contest conducted by PROTON called \u201cName the National Car Contest\u201d. From a plethora of entries, the name that created history was submitted by Staff Sergeant Ismail Jaafar from Penang who saw the name while playing a game of scrabble.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18581\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carsome.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/shutterstock_1198865686-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"proton saga\" width=\"758\" height=\"505\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Saga is also an abbreviation of the words \u2018safety\u2019, \u2018achievement\u2019, \u2018greatness\u2019 and \u2018ability\u2019 which is exactly what the car embodies. The name \u2018Saga\u2019 could also be easily pronounced by different languages and was without any negative connotation in both Bahasa Malaysia and English which is another plus point.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Celebrating Proton Saga\u2019s 35<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This year, this car celebrates its 35<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary since its first creation and to commemorate that, PROTON launched the Saga Anniversary Edition in a first ever virtual launch over social media (why social media? Because MCO happened) on the 9<sup>th<\/sup> of July 2020, marking the 4, 150, 035<sup>th<\/sup> Proton Saga to roll off the line. This anniversary edition is limited to 1,100 units only and is made exclusively in black with yellow highlights on both the exterior and interior of the car.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18582\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carsome.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Quarter-Front-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"proton saga\" width=\"813\" height=\"539\" \/>image source : Proton<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, as a thank you for supporting the series for the past 35 years, Proton also released the anniversary accessories edition with includes Front Skirting, Side Skirtings, Door Visors, Hood Insulators, Trunk Lid Cover and Boot Tray.<\/p>\n<p>35 years down the line, this car has literally gone through a heap load of changes to cater the varying demands of the people. But deep down in the core of its creation, Proton Saga\u2019s stays loyal to its concept which is to provide the most affordable car yet does not compromise on its ability and greatness. Now, lets drive down memory lane and see some of the other great Sagas\u2019 creation that were made along the line.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Proton Saga (1985 \u2013 1992)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Based on the 1983 Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore, this car is powered by the 1.3L 4G13 Orion II engine and introduced a 1.5L 4G15 Orion II powered engine at RM 17, 575 and RM 19,000 respectively. Fun Fact \u2013 Tun Dr. Mahathir was the first one to buy the 1.5S Proton Saga as a gift for his wife Datin Seri Dr. Siti Hasmah.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-18583\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carsome.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/proton-saga-feature-4-990x692-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"proton saga\" width=\"781\" height=\"547\" \/><\/p>\n<p>photo source : Proton<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Proton Saga Aeroback (1987 -1992)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The car gets a facelift and joins the hatchback family with the Proton Saga Aeroback which was introduced in 1987 offering mild mechanical and beauty upgrades.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Proton Saga Iswara (1992-2006)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">On the 15<sup>th<\/sup> of August 1992, Proton Saga Iswara was launched and another fun fact \u2013 this car was named after the great Helen butterfly of Sarawak. The Saga Iswara got major alteration in both its exterior and interior. It was also equipped with the Orion 1.3L and 1.5L engines and was the preferred choices for Malaysia\u2019s taxis.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Proton Saga LMST (2003-2008)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The Proton Saga LMST went through 3 different upgrades. In 2003, this Saga had a major transformation in its interior and exterior modifications and improvements. It featured the 1.3L 4G13 Carburettor engine and was tuned to produce 83 bhp. In late 2006, this car had another exterior upgrade and was only available in two colours \u2013 black and orange. The last upgrade came in 2007 when PROTON launched the final facelift model of the first-generation Proton Saga, the Merdeka Anniversary Edition. It was sold at a fraction of price as a symbol of PROTON\u2019s gratitude to their customers.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b><\/b> <b>Proton Generation 2 (Saga BLM) (2008 \u2013 2010)<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out with the old, in with the new with the second-generation Saga or also known as Proton Saga BLM. It was first designed to be available with a 1.6L CamPro engine that produced 110 horsepower. The 1.3L CamPro variant was later introduced and these two were the first models to bear PROTON\u2019s new corporate logo.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong>Proton Saga FL (2010 \u2013 2011)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Proton Saga FL came with a mild facelift and the name \u2018FL\u201d stood for facelift. It received mostly exterior changes especially the rear bumper, grille, rims and head lamps. This car also featured the new Clarion audio system that came with USB and AUX ports.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong>Proton Saga FLX (2011-2016)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Adding to the line, PROTON introduced the FLX, where the \u2018X\u2019 stands for extra. This Saga FLX is equipped with the updated CamPro IAFM+ engine, 2 airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD). Other upgrades included body-colored bodykit, bootlid spoiler and 14-inch six-spoke alloy wheels.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li><strong>The Saga Third Generation (2016 to present)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The third generation Saga is the newer and cooler replacement to the second-generation Proton Saga. Its body is based on the FLX but the exterior and the interior has been totally re-vamped. This car is powered by the Iriz\u2019s 1.3L VVT engine and CVT combination which has further refined for improved fuel efficiency and smoother driving experience.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14598\" src=\"https:\/\/www.carsome.my\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Proton-Saga-45-Front_Hires-RGB-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"proton saga\" width=\"773\" height=\"580\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Proton Saga, a Proud Malaysian Product<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This car has certainly come a long way since the introduction of the first Saga, thirty-five years ago.
