Do you know that it\u2019s been 60 years since Volvo introduced the three-point seat belt as a standard equipment in the front seats of its cars? Invented by Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin in 1959, they decided to give the patent away so that it could be fitted to any car from any manufacturer. Based on internal data collected by Volvo Cars since the 1960s, it has been estimated that the three-point safety belt has saved more than a million lives.<\/p>\n

So in conjunction with the anniversary of the safety belt, and the approaching Hari Raya festivities, Volvo Car Malaysia is launching the #SafeDrive road safety campaign to raise awareness of the importance of using safety belts for all car occupants.<\/p>\n

\u201cVolvo is continually introducing many safety innovations, but it is high time that we get back to the basics \u2013 we will work closely with the Road Safety Department (JKJR) and the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) to raise public awareness on the importance of using the three-point safety belt. I believe the increased use of the safety belt by all car occupants, will help to reduce the number of road fatalities and serious injuries in the country,\u201d said Nalin Jain, MD of Volvo Car Malaysia.<\/p>\n

According to MIROS\u2019 gathered data in 2017, an average of 16 road fatalities were recorded daily in the month of Ramadan and Syawal (Hari Raya month). A way to reduce this statistic is to ensure that everyone including the rear passengers of the car are properly secured using the appropriate safety restraints and seats.<\/p>\n

It is also interesting to note that Volvo Cars have also recently introduced the E.V.A. Initiative, opening up over 40 years of the collected crash data from their research to the rest of the car industry. In the brand\u2019s development to make safer cars, Volvo has developed their car structure, safety belt and side airbags to minimize the impact inflicted unto its occupants, something they call the Side Impact Protection System.<\/p>\n
