According to a survey recently conducted by Bosch Malaysia, it found that seven out of 10 vehicle breakdowns are caused by battery malfunctions. Out of that, they also found that 75 per cent of Malaysian drivers use maintenance-free batteries, with the rest on conventional lead-acid batteries.
The common misconception with car batteries is usually among two – wet or dry cell batteries. But contrary to that, all batteries have wet cells in them. It is only whether it requires maintenance or is maintenance-free.
Conventional lead-acid batteries, need to have constant regular maintenance on the driver’s part, which not only means topping up of distilled water when the battery fluid level falls, but also to regulate the use of the battery by reducing the use of power hungry electronic devices. It is said that approximately 50 per cent of premature lead-acid car battery failure is caused by water loss, mostly due to the lack of maintenance or evaporation from high heat under the bonnet especially in Malaysia.
When it comes to maintenance-free batteries, they have higher cranking power, charge capacities, recharge faster and last longer compared to conventional lead-acid batteries. Most are also equipped with indicators to determine whether the battery is at its optimum charge, and when it needs a replacement. In addition, Bosch maintenance-free batteries are equipped with a flame-arrestor feature that enhances safety by preventing external sparks or flames from igniting battery gasses.
