The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ Is In Desa Park City This Weekend

The Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ spells a beginning for the new generation of electric vehicles that is set to be the future of mobility. And it is here for the first time in South-East Asia through Mercedes-Benz Malaysia's EQ Brand Exhibition at The Waterfront in Desa ParkCity from the 4th till 7th May 2018. If you're unable to attend, read on to find out what the Concept EQ is about.

At the heart of it, the Concept EQ is a reinterpretation of Mercedes-Benz’s design philosophy of sensual purity to create an avant-garde, contemporary and distinctive electro-look. The design of the visionary show car has been reduced to the essentials, revealing an alluring progressivity.

Electric-Vehicle Architecture

The new generation of electric vehicles will be based on an architecture developed specifically for battery-electric models. The wheelbase, track width and other system components, especially the batteries, are variable thanks to the modular building-block system. More importantly, the vehicle concept is optimised to meet every requirement of a future-oriented, battery-electric model family.

As a SUV crossover, the Concept EQ has a width of 1948 mm, stands at 1560 mm and its length is 4730 mm.

Driver-Oriented Cockpit

The focus of the cockpit is on simple, touch-based controls with a new electro-look reflecting the exterior styling. Additionally, the design of instrument panel with its large, floating wide-screen display is tailored to the driver. The innovative, digital user experience differentiates Concept EQ from the controls in today’s vehicles, paving way to the future of user interaction at Mercedes-Benz.

New Light Signature for Electric Cars

There is a new exterior and interior light signature surrounding the vehicle. The distinguishing mark of Concept EQ is the “Black Panel” front grille: the white-illuminated Mercedes star and all the light elements in it. Also, the blue-illuminated surround gives a completely new interpretation of the typical Mercedes radiator grille.

The rear lamps take up the contour of the “Black Panel”, which are surrounded by an LED optical fibre in electric blue, which changes to red when the vehicle is moving. Similarly, at the front end, the clasp-like light signature changes to orange as soon as the direction indicator is operated.

Adaptive Ambience Lighting

A special feel-good atmosphere is produced by the adaptive ambience lighting on board Concept EQ. There are lighting elements from the light strip underneath the windscreen, on the side and middle air vents, seats, door handles and interior door panels, on the centre console and around the Mercedes star in the steering wheel too.

Powerful Electric Drive and Estimated 500 Kilometre Range

Two electric motors exist on the front and rear axles and the battery is located in the vehicle floor. Meanwhile, the electric all-wheel drive with axle-variable torque distribution gives an output of up to 402 hp in the highest variant and a maximum torque of up to 700 Nm. The Concept EQ makes it to 100 km/h in under five seconds. In part with the intelligent operating strategy from Mercedes-Benz, the Concept EQ has a range of up to 500 kilometres.

The drivetrain is powered by its high-efficiency lithium-ion battery originating from Daimler subsidiary Deutsche ACCUMOTIVE. Thanks to their modular design, the innovative battery systems have a model-specific total capacity of over 70 kWh. The introduction of fast charging by the Combined Charging System (CCS) allows for fast charging with a far greater capacity. In future, a charging capacity of up to 300 kW is planned which would enable 100 locally emission-free kilometres to be recharged within five minutes.

Driver Assistance Systems for Maximum Safety

The Concept EQ feature the latest driver assistance systems from Mercedes-Benz. The official maps and navigation partner HERE, gives the system the intelligence to use highly accurate maps, which allows the vehicle to automatically adjust the speed and driving dynamics. As well as that, experts at Mercedes-Benz believes in the intelligent combination of data from different sensors otherwise known as “sensor fusion” as one of the key requirements to automated driving.

Intelligent Driver Assistance

The focus of the user interface is on the optimal driver assistance as the main concern is to make best possible use of the available energy in the batteries to achieve the best possible range. The innovative consumption display provides the driver with feedback on their driving style while drawing attention to energy-saving possibilities.

On top of the EQ exhibition at The Waterfront in Desa Park City, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia also unveiled a two-bay EQ charging station which joins the other three EQ stations in Bangsar Shopping Centre, Sunway Pyramid and Pavilion KL.
