The 2019 Volvo S60 Is Swedish Sports Sedan Perfection

Volvo Cars has revealed the all-new third generation S60 mid-size sports sedan at the company’s first United States manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina. Here are the highlights.

The Looks

  • The new S60 is the first Volvo car made in the US. The brand’s launch and factory there reinforces Volvo Cars’ commitment to the US, an important market for the company.

  • The new S60 is the first Volvo to be sold without a diesel variant. This is showcasing the company’s commitment to electrification and long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine. Last year, Volvo Cars were the first global car maker to announce that from 2019 and beyond, all-new models will be electrified.

  • The 2019 S60 shares the same Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, safety technology and infotainment system with the model’s V60 estate sibling launched earlier this year. This makes it one of the safest cars on the road.

  • It will be available with a T5 – 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol with 250 hp, T6 – 2.0-litre turbo and supercharged petrol with 316 hp, T6 Twin Engine – 2.0-litre Plug-in Hybrid with 340 hp and the top ranging T8 Twin Engine – 2.0-litre Plug-in Hybrid with 400 hp.

  • Volvo has mentioned that the new S60 is made to be a true drivers car. Volvo is one of the first few car manufacturers in the world to implement a full scale state of the art simulator for driving dynamics. The simulator played a vital role in the development of the chassis performance in the new S60. This allowed engineers to test and evaluate wheel suspensions, brakes and geometry early in the development process.

  • It will come with City Safety with Autobrake technology that assists the driver in avoiding potential collisions, and is the only system in the market to recognise pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. The system also now engages auto braking for oncoming collisions.

  • There will be a Polestar Engineered performance upgrade for the T8 Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid variant that will have better wheels, brakes, suspension and ECU and boost the combined output to 415 hp.

What do you think? How will this go against the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes C-Class and Jaguar XE?
