Efkon launches E-Tag & MaxTag Infra-red device

Despite the recent introduction of Touch ‘n Go’s RFID programme, Efkon Asia, the Austrian technology provider of the infra-red toll collection system on Malaysian motorways has launched its own branded E-Tag to ensure the availability of compatible devices that can be used at SmartTAG lanes.

Since the discontinuation of the SmartTAG device, Efkon’s branded E-Tag will be available at offline channels such as accessories shops, while the MaxTag by Sigma Technology will be sold at Lazada and 11Street for RM138. The company has said that consumer response to the MaxTag has been well, with over 1,500 units sold in just four days of its online availability.

For users that are wary about the quality of the E-Tag or MaxTag, Helmuth Blasch, Efkon Asia director says that the new units feature new microprocessors and enhanced display for even better performance and reliability. “These proven infra-red Tag devices provide peace of mind to users by providing secure transactions with the exact toll amount paid immediately visible. Most importantly, there’s no possibility of cloning and risk of losing control of your finances through incorrect deductions,” Blasch said.

“Infra-red Tag devices are cost-effective solutions for frequent highway users. Each device is robustly-built with a high-impact resistant casing. As it can be kept inside a vehicle and not subject to external environment conditions and vandalism, one can easily last 15 years or more,” he added.

Efkon isn’t a stranger in this field. In Germany, the brand has installed the Nationwide Truck Tolling System that is on all motorways in a Multi-Lane Free Flow configuration which has proven to be highly effective. This system caters to more than two million trucks travelling at up to 100 km/h.

What do you think? Do you feel that the SmartTAG lanes are still relevant, or should the RFID system replace this?
