Hyundai Elantra Overview

The Hyundai Elantra is a C-segment family sedan that was introduced in Malaysia back in 2012 in its fifth-generation. Currently in its seventh generation, the Elantra sports a bold, sharp styling that sets it apart from other C-segment sedans in Malaysia. It goes against sedans like the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, and Mazda 3.

General Information

Variants

There are two variants of the Hyundai Elantra in Malaysia. They are the Hyundai Elantra Smartstream G1.6 Executive and the Smartstream G1.6 Premium.

Due to it being a fully imported complete built up (CBU) unit, the Elantra is costlier than most of its rivals. The price of a new Hyundai Elantra in Malaysia starts from RM139,888.00 for the Executive variant and RM158,888.00 for the Premium variant.

Colors Available

There are four colors available on the Hyundai Elantra in Malaysia. They are the Polar White, Intense Blue, Amazon Grey, and Electric Shadow.

Hyundai Elantra Basic Features

Interior

The interior of the Hyundai Elantra has an elegant and practical layout. The front instruments are angled slightly toward the driver and are all within easy reach for an easier driving experience. While the Executive and Premium variants share a lot of interior features, there are some differences between them. Firstly, the Elantra Executive variant has black fabric seats, manually adjusted driver’s seat, a 4.2-inch TFT LCD instrument cluster, and an unheated multifunction leather steering wheel.

The Elantra Premium variant, on the other hand, has black and light grey leather seats, a powered driver’s seat with lumbar support, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, as well as a 10.25-inch Supervision TFT LCD with Rheostat instrument cluster. Other interior features of the Hyundai Elantra are a dual-zone auto air conditioner with rear air vents and an electronic parking brake.

Exterior

On the exterior, the Hyundai Elantra has full LED lighting with dual-LED headlamps, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), LED positioning lamps, LED rear combination lamps, and LED rear fog lamps. It also has auto-folding electric wing mirrors with turn signals and heating function.

Cabin Space

The Hyundai Elantra is quite a spacious C-segment sedan. It measures 4,675 mm long, 1,825 mm wide, and 1,430 mm tall. It has a decently sized 474-liter boot which is more than enough for most families.

Infotainment system

The infotainment in the Hyundai Elantra is controlled on an 8-inch floating display with AUX, USB, Bluetooth, voice recognition, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. The premium variant also has a wireless smartphone charging system with temperature sensor and cooling function. There are six speakers in the Elantra.

Hyundai Elantra Driving Performance

The Hyundai Elantra is powered by a Smartstream G1.6 Multi-Point Injection (MPi) engine with a 1,589 cc displacement. It produces a max power of 123 PS at 6,300 rpm and a max torque of 154 Nm at 4,500 rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels via an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) with eight virtual speeds. The Elantra has an estimated fuel consumption of 5.4 L/100 km.

Hyundai Elantra Safety Features

With an aim of being a good family car, the Hyundai Elantra is well equipped in terms of safety features. Both the Executive and Premium variants are equipped with all the standard safety features such as six airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Brake Assist System (BAS), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Traction Control System (TCS), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), and cruise control.

The Premium variant gets additional advanced safety features including Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Following Assist, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, High Beam Assist (HBA), Driver Attention Warning (DAW), and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist.

The Hyundai Elantra is a good all-rounder with bold exterior styling and an upmarket interior. With its advanced safety features and comfortable driving characteristics, it also makes for a good family car. However, with the Hyundai Elantra’s high price in Malaysia, it can be a tough sell for buyers looking for more value in their car.
