BMW Series 5 Basic Features

Interior

The interior of the BMW 5 Series has a classy and practical layout that focuses on function rather than form with more physical buttons than touch panels, and are therefore easy to reach and operate. Interior features of the 5 Series include a full LCD instrument cluster, Dakota leather upholstery in black or cognac, black Dakota Leather-wrapped dashboard, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped M Sport steering wheel with multi-function controls as well as tilt and telescopic electric adjustments, Qi wireless charging, alloy foot pedals, a head-up display that projects information such as the current speed and navigation, as well as a sunroof.

Exterior

The updated 2021 BMW 5 Series has a long body with a coupe-like roofline, and straight lines giving the car an elegant, no-nonsense aesthetic. In the front, it has a redesigned kidney grille that connects seamlessly with the BMW Laserlight. At the rear, it has 3D-shaped LED taillights. It is also fitted with the M Sport exterior kit consisting of an M Sport front bumper with larger air intakes, a rear bumper with a grey apron and free-form trapezoidal exhaust pipes, M badges throughout the body, and 19-inch two-tone alloy wheels with blue painted M Sport brake calipers.

Cabin Space

As a large sedan, the BMW 5 Series has ample space in the cabin and boot. The car measures 4,963 mm long, 1,868 mm wide, and 1,467 mm tall with a cargo capacity of 530 liters, expandable by folding the rear seats down.

Infotainment system

The infotainment in the BMW 5 Series is handled by a 12.3-inch touch screen infotainment display connected to an iDrive rotary controller, with Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Audio is played on a Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system. Besides music and navigation, the infotainment display also houses the onboard BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant that can be operated with voice controls.

BMW Series 5 Driving Performance

Both BMW 5 Series variants are powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, though with different tuning. On the 530i M Sport, the engine produces 254 PS of max power from 5,200 to 6,500 rpm and 350 Nm of max torque from 1,450 to 4,800 rpm, giving the car a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration of 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. It also has a combined fuel consumption of 6.7 L/100 km.

The 2.0-liter engine on the 530e M Sport variant produces 184 PS of max power from 5,000 to 6,500 rpm and 300 Nm of max torque from 1,350 to 4,000 rpm, while the electric motor produces 109 PS of max power at 3,140 rpm and 265 Nm of max torque. With both powertrains combined, the hybrid variant produces a total of 292 PS of power and 420 Nm of torque. With its 12 kWh lithium-ion battery, it has a fuel consumption of 2.3 L/100 km.

BMW Series 5 Safety Features

The BMW 5-Series has plenty of safety features but it lacks many advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) features. It has six airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Braking Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), ISOFIX, Hill Start Assist (HSA), a 360-degree parking camera, front and rear parking sensors, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, and Cruise Control with stop and go.

Despite the lack of ADAS features, the BMW 5 Series offers a lot of kit, refinement, and performance. It’s also spacious which makes it a great family car. With everything that it has to offer, the BMW 5 Series is a solid choice with a fair price.
